approaching 40 at breakneck speed [October 10 ]i.m beginning to worry about what sort of cards I’ll receive.what ’s wrong with hey, you’ll have more confidence and care less of what others think of you..in the grand scheme of things, no one gives a sh*t.
worry less.

“That’s not a birthday card, it’s a potted Becket play”. Brilliant. And how true.

I want a talking David Mitchell birthday card !

I turned 40 this year and got cards reminding me of how old I’ve become… but I don’t mind that, because being 40 feels like an achievement to me and I like the humour.

It’s when people send you cards which are blank inside with a picture of flowers on the front for your birthday, that I find annoying. You know that card wasn’t picked specifically for you. Most likely the person forgot it was your birthday, (or you weren’t worthy of a trip to the shops) and used a random card kept for such situations. Cards sent with little thought, they are the worst type in my opinion.

I haven’t got enough Ram to install the Flash Player & ChannelFlip won’t let me watch on YouTube. So I’ll just comment on what I imagine it was like. David had some scathing words about novelty cards. Something about weird gifts people send him, like action figures. Something about blank cards while wearing the read shirt with a party hat…..It’s uncanny how close I am, isn’t it? Yep.

My grandad, who’s 85, and I have a tradition of giving quality humour cards to each other. He already knows he old and I already know I’m a cynic, so we never state the obvious via birthday greetings. If he can’t get out to find the right card, he’ll re-tell tales of his service in WWII up in New Guinea. I particularly love the one about his camp bed catching fire during the night after, coincidentally, having had beans for tea …Anyway, he is old and he’s always going to get shitty presents like hankys and soap-on-a-rope. If I can lessen the disappointment for him with a ribald joke in card form, then I can be assured my naming in the will is secure.

I solved this problem years ago huni! I stopped celebrating my birthday ages ago!
My 21st was the last birthday I acknowledged (turning 30 in a month) & not because I don’t want to get old or think about getting old I just don’t see the point!
Celebrating something that 99.9% of people don’t remember & that was 100% nothing to do with us (mums do all the work) & that every single person on the planet goes through seems pointless!
Explaining this to new people I meet is difficult as they can never get their head round the fact of not getting any presents!
“But I can still give you a gift?”
“No!”
“Well I can at least wish you Happy Birthday can’t I?”
“No!!!”
So I’ve now started to refuse even telling people the date of my birthday to save alot of trouble!
Sometimes that doesn’t even work! Idiots!!!!
I despair!
But I love getting Christmas cards! Weird huh??
David you are a comedy genius & a very cute genius to boot! Hope there will be more of these podcasts in the future!!
