mitchell: David Mitchell’s SoapBox: Unusually Smart

Move over Trinny and Susannah. You have some competition from the most unlikely of quarters.

In this week’s episode of SoapBox, David tackles the subject of what men should and shouldn’t wear. When is the ripped jean and spangly shirt combo acceptable? Is black tie the answer to all of our sartorial problems? And do good looking men dress better than the rest of us?

As ever, do enjoy the show, make sure you subscribe to get the new episodes as soon as they’re available, and watch out for next week’s episode. It’s a cracker.

Another cracking piece of work from Team MitchellFlip.
Really enjoyed the mini-Mitchell. Just brilliant.
Personally, I like wearing a green smoking jacket which, I admit, is showing off a little bit.

David.

David, David, David.

So many words spring to mind. Such as wonderful. Brilliant. Hilarious. Dead on. Apart from a few comments, which I will now address…

1. You are NOT ugly. You are intellegent, funny, and attractive. A triple threat in fact.

2. You do not dress terribly. I think you always look smart. In your very attractive dinner suit you just look even smarter then your usual everyday smartness.

3. I disagree with your statement that “men, in general, don’t have to look as good as women” as I think it would be more acurate to say men don’t have to try as hard to look good (specifically at dressy events) as women do. To be fair, in general, women enjoy the experiance of choosing an outfit, accessories, cosmetics etc… so apart from the silly gals that make it into some sort of crisis, which takes all the fun out of it, men should’nt have to make the same effort since they are, primarily, not wired that way.

So here’s to all the fine looking fella’s in their very smart dinner suits. They may not look “cool”, but they’ll always look Classic! :)

By the way… is the mini-me version you are holding at one point destined to be the new Oscar? I may not be an actress, but I would love to have one for my mantlepiece. :)

Fantstic!! i have to agree with Angela on two accounts one i would also love a mini you on my mantlepiece(even though you in the flesh would be even better) which brings me to my second agreement which is you are definatley NOT ugly you are gorgeous and sexy you always look very smart no matter what you are wearing you are intellegent and very funny love you xx.

David as he should be: ranting perfect sense.

Sartorial advice:

All men: You don’t have to dress well, but please, please take the trouble to smell nice. As women we don’t ask a lot, we know not to expect much, so it’s a low bar: but lather, rinse, repeat, please.

David: Have you tried wearing a deep, dark blue?

As an extremely good-looking, intelligent man I can’t resist adding that extra bit of colour to my clothes. I can because I’ve impeccable taste too. Just wish I had somewhere to go.

I *love* that parting shot! “It shouldn’t be hard ….” etc.

Yes, men do have it so much easier dressing smart. But I think there is a female equivalent of the tux: the “little black dress”. I do not own one, however, because 1) I hate black, and 2) the littleness is impractical. I’m afraid of catching pneumonia.

I liked the CID gag :-)

For year I’ve been clinging onto the rule that it’s definitively rude to make too much of an effort in the company of women. Especially the self-conscious who might feel out-smarted (in the aesthetic sense).

Long live unimgainative dress codes. Long live the tux.

Don’t be silly, David. You’re not in the least bit ugly!

We should all be naked and then there would be no worries about what to wear.

To the authors of the intellegent comments - you are being judged :-)

June 27th, 2009 - 12:25am

Oh bugger. Seems like I’m the target for David’s vitriol this time. I wore a blue three piece suit with a white long-sleeved t-shirt and purple converse to my 6th Form leavers do the other week

June 27th, 2009 - 12:33am

^ Wouldn’t consider myself handsome though. Would like to think I’m above average intelligence but I probably misuse it. I just think it’s boring to see everyone wearing the smae thing

I think women should invent some sort of outfit which is acceptable to wear to all dressy occasions. Perhaps we should all just turn up in tuxedo’s.

I don’t really notice what men wear, but I like it when they smell nice. If the guys in my flat worry about anything it’s how their man-perfume smells, rather than their shirt.
