games: Katharine’s Favourite Games of 2008

A new year is a chance to look back at the old, and today I’m looking back and picking my favourite games from 2008.

This is perhaps a rather atypical list, but I think it reflects my own philosophy of gaming which is much more concerned with how much enjoyment and entertainment a game facilitates rather than how may boxes it ticks for technical brilliance or popularity. Don’t forget to leave a comment with your own favourites of 2008 and what you’re looking out for in 2009.

I also have an announcement: this is actually my last episode writing and presenting ChannelFlip Games. Thank you so much to everyone who watches the show for all your support over the last 15 months, you guys have been fantastic and I’ll miss you!

However, do stay tuned for CFG re-incarnated next week!

No more Katharine!? Oh no ;.; You’ll definitely be missed, and a hard act to follow. Good luck to you though.

Katharine, ’tis a shame you’re leaving, but here’s hoping it’s to bigger and better things. I just hope the show retains the same sort of tone and the eclectic coverage that made it interesting to watch, even in instances where you didn’t necessarily care overly about the game in question.
Best of luck!

Noooo! Where’re you going? Please say you’re doing more internetty things! You’re the reason I come to this website! It’s fun to actually SEE game reviewers and have them have some personality, while still reviewing the game. But, although I sure it’ll continue, I loved your style.

Damn.

Ahh well. All the best tee ye.

*sad* No more Katharine?
I really hope the new CFG will be a worthy successor, which, imo, will be pretty hard to accomplish. Katharine made the show unique, which is why I watched it.
Well, best of luck to you, Katharine, either way.

So far, my game of the year is Little Big Planet, I guess. I’ve actually not really given it a lot of thought, though, it’s just the first game that comes to mind when I think about which games I enjoyed last year. World of Goo was awesome, too, and Fallout 3 surprised me by actually being enjoyable, too.
Those 3 are probably my top 3, although I still haven’t come around to playing the new Prince and Mirror’s Edge, both games I have high hopes for.

There is so much that has already been said and so much that will be repeated. Sameness is the nemesis of inspiration. That is a principle that I hold dear and one that - given the style of your presentations and the games you choose to critique - I imagine you share. That is what’s kept me watching for the last year or so and that’s what I think makes you special. I must however - at the risk of out right hypocrisy - say that this website is losing one of its very best. There are few critics who really challenge me as a viewer or in this case as a gamer. You are one of them. The gaming community is fortunate to have you as one of it’s denizens. I anxiously await your next forum.

You will be missed Katharine. You gave the only game reviews I would listen to in full, without skipping to the end to hear the summary and score. Your analysis was always intelligent, relevant and most importantly, enjoyable. Thanks!

We are all gutted to see Katharine move on to pastures new. I’m sure she will continue to Twitter her online whereabouts! In the meantime, we really do intend to keep the same amazing flavour that Katharine has created, because we know that she has swiftly become the best thing on the internets. Stay tuned! :)

What A way to go aye. Since the first video I saw for riff everyday shooter I knew that miss fletcher was unlike many hosts I see on the net, you were always so unique and justified every score and thought better than any other game journalist around. Most of all you were just a breath of fresh air on the internet. Its sad to see you go but even more exciting to see what you do next. Channel flip games can only go up from your shimmering example and I am also excited to see that. This is not the last we have seen of Katharine fletcher, like I have told friends and many others. A legendary run from one of the best; keep up the good work as usual.

Argh! No! My favorite reviewer and one of my favorite online personalities leaving?!?
Well, thanks for turning me onto games like N+, World of Goo, the Penny Arcade games and, of course, zelda which started it all for me. I don’t really play many games, but I wrapped all those and turned a lot of my friends and family onto them too.
Loved your unique style,
Smart unique and to the point,
Take care and good luck

Oh no, I am truly bummed. You are the best female game reviewer out there and I always enjoyed your take on things. I will truly miss you around here and I hope you’ll be producing/staring in something else soon. DX

Hey guys, just wanted to say a massive thank you to everyone who left comments here, or has messaged me their good wishes on facebook and twitter. It’s incredibly humbling and, tbh, a little overwhelming. You guys are the best!

I probably won’t have much of a web presence for the next few months as I’m taking a break from the media to work on a few of my own projects (mostly creative writing), but there may well be something web-based further down the line. Anyway, anyone who wants to is welcome to follow me on twitter (Katharine2501) and I promise I’ll update more frequently from now on!

Best wishes to all,
K x
