games: Far Cry 2

Today we’re looking at Far Cry 2 from Ubisoft’s Montreal Studio. It doesn’t bear much resemblance to the original Far Cry, but it’s a great game which feels a lot like Grand Theft Auto might if it was set in an African region torn by civil war.

Ok, this is not COD4, that said it does offer bigger maps. Graphics are a bit cartoon like for my taste, but I can live with them.

I didn’t think too much of the game itself and bought it to play online as I much prefer playing other people and the different tactics and skill sets that this brings.

It’s certainly not as well polished as COD4, but as an alternative to COD4 it’s not too bad.

I got this a few weeks ago but have hardly played it. Mainly due to my increasing obsession with certain sackpeople but also down to how annoyed I got with the enemy’s when I first played it. They all seem to be crack marksmen with sniper accuracy even when firing shotguns and like Katharine pointed out they are harder to take down than Ned Kelly.

At first I thought the guns were all horrifically inaccurate but I then realised I was hitting them but the bullets had very little effect and the enemy didn’t even seem to realise they were being hit.

Hmm I am not sure I will get this, never really been an fps fan (except resistance and timesplitters) so think I will give it a miss but credit where credit is due this those look amazing and the map editor is astounding. Another great feature katharine as always; can’t wait for the next one and keep up the good work like you always do.

Hey Miss Flethcer you really need to buy a dictionary when you’re writing your captions! Although I notice you’ve already fixed it :)

FarCry2 looks really good. I’m trying to work out if I want the PC or the 360 version. Apparently you can only quicksave on the PC, do you reckon this will make much of a difference?

Cheers guys. Ben, can you tell me which captions are you talking about please as I haven’t corrected anything!

Katharine - Your surname was spelt incorrectly at the beginning. It was Flethcer or something. I was gonna mention it in my post but thought I would leave it because I always seem to be picking holes in stuff lol

It’s one the great joys of being dyslexic……yeah I fixed my barins(woops did it again) wonderful ability to swop letters without me seeing it.

OK, credit where credit’s due, Arnold produces the videos, not me (I just write and present the content). He does such a damn good job, that I think we can forgive him the odd spelling mistake, especially as I never spot them when I watch the videos back!

Sorry Arnold, it wasn’t meant as a criticism - I found it funny if anything! Katharine - you’ll always be Miss Flethcer to me from now on!

Any ideas for which version of this I should get then?

Ben, none taken, I take my dyslexia with a pinch of salt, hell sometimes i am able to reverse an entire sentence when I’m really excited or in a lot of pain.

dude I would go with the PC version, as you will get the full benefits of your graphics card if you have something like a 8800 gts or higher, + mouse ftw,

I’ve only played the 360 version so can’t advise from any real position of authority, but if you can’t try before you buy, I think this game might work best on PC, esp for the campaign and level editing. Obvi graphics will be better, but there’s also just something about the way it feels. Also, IGN’s review pointed out that in the PC version you can save anywhere whereas the console versions only let you save at certain save points. On Metacritic and Game Rankings the PC version has had slightly better scores than the console versions. Be warned though, it uses SecuROM DRM software like Spore.

nice review… I’ll probably skip this one. I’m not a fan of open world overall, the narrative tends to suffer badly for the sake of having a huge environment filled with pretty generic quests / missions.
But one thing interested me: What’s so deep and complex about the editor? I saw a demonstration video once and pretty much all there was was editing a heightmap terrain and placing prebuilt objects on it.

Off-topic:
The download link doesn’t seem to work in Firefox for me in this vid. All I get is a black site saying “video is loading”, but nothing happens. Internet Explorer works, though. Just thought I’d mention it.
