games: November Gaming

Trying to keep on top of all the latest releases is a mammoth task at this time of year, so here’s a helpful heads-up for the coming month. Lots of good stuff out including Mirror’s Edge - WOOOOO! I don’t suppose I’m alone in this, but I have been dying to play this one for ages!

Have a good month guys :)

CoD WaW is a tricky one. I’ve played the multiplayer beta and its frankly a bit rubbish, feeling like a cheap knockoff of the CoD4 multiplayer that’s badly shoehorned in some of the gameplay features of the previous one instead of trying to tread it’s own path. Still, the co-op mode looks quite fun, as does the zombie survival mode, so I shall keep half an eye on it.

Also played the demo of Mirrors Edge, which is pretty damm fun and very slick. Can’t fault it presentation wise, but I do worry a bit about the level design and length of the single player campaign. By opting for linear levels with one or two paths they’ve removed any possibility of allowing you to go about things in your own way and explore in favour of tightly controlling the players experience and offering time trial modes. I can see the logic of the decision, but the level design and campaign are going to have to be top notch, because the time trial mode they’re counting on for long term appeal isn’t going to be everyones cup of tea.

There’s a demo of Endwar sat on my HD as well, but I’ve yet to try it - partly from fear of looking like a mentalist when shouting at my telly. I wonder how well it copes with the various types of regional accents?

Is Netflix coming to the UK as well? I thought it was only implemented in the US of A version of the new dash? Looking forward to that though, if only because it finally means game independent party functionality and private chat for up to eight people, which will be an absolute lifesaver.

And So we are in November. Hmmm i played all these games except gears 2 at the eurogamer expo and thank god i did because I have made my choices for what games i will get. smackdown, resistance 2, tomb raider and mirrors edge or call of duty world at war still up in the air on those two. Still this month is going to be great as it usually is and I can’t wait to play gears of war 2. A great feature as always and thanks for keeping me informed. Keep up the great work my friend.

What about Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts? Thats too big not to be mentioned.

My bad Jim, I meant to include Banjo-Kazooie in this but that section must have been accidentally skipped over when I was putting together the final draft. Nuts & Bolts is out on the 14th and if you pre-order at participating stores (including Gamestation, Game, Play and Amazon) you will also get a code to download the original from XBLA.

Katharine, I’ll let you off.. this time! From the video clips I’ve seen it looks really fun. I’m going to try the demo tonight, but with the inclusion of the original version for XBLA, it looks like a worthy purchase.

I tried out the demo of Mirror’s Edge last night and I’m sad to say I was a bit underwhelmed. It was one of the titles I was looking forward to most this year but all the while I was playing I couldn’t help but feel it would have been better as a 3rd person game.

I just felt disoriented and had to keep looking around to see where I was so couldn’t get the kind of flowing movement you can in say a Tony Hawk game.

It might just be that I suck at it but I’ll give it another try.

On the other hand the Mirror’s Edge levels popping up in LittleBigPlanet are fantastic :)
