games: Fable 2

Welcome to Albion, a world where you can make people laugh or wrinkle their noses at you in disgust by farting, can play with and teach your dog tricks, and can get fat, ugly or pregnant depending on your lifestyle choices. Oh yeah, and there’s some questing in there too!

I hear good (and generally amusing) tales about Fable 2 from a lot of people, but I’m really not sure about spending my hard earned cash on it with Far Cry 2 and L4D just around the corner as well. Heck, I still haven’t finished Mercs or Saints Row 2 and the last game I played with even a hint of RPG about it was Vampire : The Masquerade Bloodlines- which despite the trudging, bugs and slightly whiffy final third managed to hold my interest throughout. So, is Fable 2 worth a punt for someone who doesn’t normally bother with RPGs?

schmung: I think Fable 2 would be a good start for those new to RPGs. I am fairly new to RPGs only playing a few on the 360 (Mass Effect, Too Human). Fable 2 is very enjoyable on so many levels. It’s one of the few games that when you are not playing it, you are thinking about playing it the first chance you get.

Great review Katharine, but I wanted to talk about the multiplayer experience in this game. I mainly got this game because of the offline co-op option. My wife and I love to play games together, at the same time. The offline (and online) co-op are a little disappointing. We found it was much more enjoyable to play one at a time, where we have full control of the camera angle. Also, it is not a true co-op story line, so if you join a friend’s game, you don’t really progress your own character’s storyline. You join merely as a “henchman” or helper of the other player. When you are a henchman, you can gain money and experience for your own character, which is good. Also, it is nice that achievements are unlocked for both players, while in co-op mode.

If you are going to mainly play by yourself, this is a top notch RPG with an amazing storyline and meaningful side quests.

I’m surprised at all the praise this game gets after its way overhyped and shallow predecessor. I shall definitely have a closer look at it :)

Btw, there’s a little sound-bug (voice sounding like in a tin box) right after you talk about the voice-actors, Katherine.

Could you make a review about SOCOM Confrontation and Call of Duty The World at War.

And by the way?? What do you know already about the new God of War 3 for PS3.

Thanks, your show is great…

@enoch. just sounds like an after thought insert. As if it was inserted later just to add a little more to the review. Nothing to loose sleep over :)

I didn’t like Fable at all, but it does look like a lot more has going into the second one, and who doesn’t love dogs?!?

Fable was one of those games that managed to be a fantastic experience despite many shortcomings. The sad bit is that if we only knew Fable in the way we used to know games - fresh out of the box with no preconceived notions beyond the description on the back of the case - it might have been hailed as the best action RPG of its day. Expectations however were set at a level that proved impossible to meet…yet still people loved it. I’m in the camp that says that its achievements far out weigh its deficiencies and I’m so excited about this return to Albion. This review has fanned the flames of my anticipation. Katherine you’ve delivered yet another well balanced and informative review. Analysts and reviewers like you heighten the richness of the greater gaming community. Party on!
