games: Tomb Raider: Underworld - preview

I recently spent a day at ‘Croft Manor’ being shown the latest Tomb Raider game, Underworld. Check it out as Eidos’ top bods talk about their vision for this game. Keep your eyes peeled for my review; it’s looking pretty interesting, but I’ll wait until I get to play a finished version before casting judgement! Until then, enjoy!

Looks quite good so far so I’ll be interested to see the full review. I always had issues with the combat in Tomb Raider games so I hope this ones different.

Nice editing at the start BTW :)

I really enjoyed Anniversary. This Tomb Raider, though, could actually be the first one to impress me visually since the first Tomb Raider when it came out.
If the story is good and the controls are at least as good as in Anniversary, I’m sold.
Too bad there wasn’t a lot of new footage in the video, already seen most of it, I believe. But hey, isn’t long until its release and I still enjoyed the vid.

oh come on… you HAVE to dig for lost treasure in a posh dining room. It’s the law. It’d be all very childish with plastic shovels and beach buckets, and you’d be all…. wot? Like this isn’t normal?!

I dislike Tomb Raider games :) and this one looks no different. But I do like the way new-Lara said ‘Hammer’ for some reason. HHHHhhhhammer

oh good, I was keeping my trap shut because I thought I was the only one who found the Tomb Raider games incredibly tedious. The voice hacting sounds pretty hawful has well..

I agree @schmung they are tedious but for some reason I really like the concept. To be honest though, she’s no Indiana Jones which reminds me, where is that game? I heard about it yonks ago but haven’t heard anything for ages :(

@KatharineFletcher would be really nice to have a preview on this if possible :) On a side note I sent you an email the other day, not sure if you got it though?

There was an Indy game going back good few years that was actually pretty good, but the thought of a game based on that Crystal Skull nonsense makes me cringe. Is your running speed chronically reduced? Actually, I’d probably give it a punt if it let me throw Shia LeBoeuf off of a cliff or into a pile of improbably large ants.

schmung. jump… puzzle… bad camera angle… repeat. I could never see the appeal past trying to stare down Lara’s pixelated cleavage, and I like to think I’m slightly more mature than that.

Chris. I actually like the TR concept also, I just think it’s been implemented with the idea of marketable character first, game second.

October 24th, 2008 - 3:59pm

@schumng Yea that was the one on the original Xbox, I’m talking about this one (http://www.lucasarts.com/games/indianajones/) uses the same engine as Force Unleashed apparently.

@David You’re right, but then there is nothing unique about the game apart from the character, so I guess they need to play on that as much as possible to sell units.

Chris - I did write some preview stuff, but in the end decided it was unfair to publish it as I’d only played the game for about 10 minutes (there were a gabillion journalists and about 5 machines at the event). There were some really good looking things and some very standard TR things, but I will wait until I get to play it properly before casting proper judgements. Btw, I did get your email thanks. Sorry for the delayed reply, but I’ve been very busy. I will try to catch up with email and get back to you over the weekend.

David - so um… there was this one Christmas party at a certain rather posh location which I won’t name, where a friend and I caused carnage, including discovering that some of the floorboards were loose…

Norbit - cheers, Arnold is the king.

November Jst got even more amazing because of this game. Man I can’t wait for this game and many other, more notably little big planet which I played the other day and was the single cutest and hardest game i have ever played and the level creator is genius. Still lara croft is a legend and I can’t wait to see her debut on the ps3 it will be truly awesome. Another great feature miss fletcher, can’t wait for the next one. Keep up the good work.xXx.

@KatharineFletcher No worries :) Quick question, they had a bike in the video, was there any mention of controllable vehicles in the final game?

So is “Laura Croft” one of those British vs. American spelling things where Brits add an extra U?

Katherine. I couldn’t resist playtime at a posh bash. I’d have to test the water first. Maybe flick h’ordeurves at the host and gauge reaction, all being well… buried treasure behind Ant Mable’s portrait would be next on the list.

Eytan. We’re posh over here, we put U’s in everything even coloUr :P

Eytan - It’s meant to be “Lara” not “Laura”. Its pronounced different too, the latter sounds like “Lora”.

Jim - I know, I was joking because the original version of the clip (it was corrected, but I still have it on my ipod) had a title card that said “Laura” rather than “Lara”.

October 29th, 2008 - 10:52am

Yeah, my bad Eytan! I don’t always get to see the videos before they go up, but the production manager did actually show me this one after he’d put it together and I completely didn’t spot the typo in that title card until after it had gone live.

October 29th, 2008 - 1:21pm

Well you know errors in title cards make it human :P and even rare since now it has become a limited edition release.

I always pronounced it Laura and never noticed that she had a crap name like Lara who calls their daughter “Lara?”(no offense intended to woman named Lara, just not a name i would give my child due to personal taste)

but then again Laura Croft doesn’t do her justice either……..
