games: Mercenaries 2: World in Flames
Wooo! Explodey fun! Now no one is ever going to look to one of these games for intellectual sophistication and depth, but you know what, balls to that, it’s pretty fun to play.
There are some issues, and let’s be honest, the AI is probably not going to make you break a sweat over the difficulty level, but hey, blowing shit up in a well designed environment is kinda nice.

You don’t mention co-op in the review, which (to me at least) is one the huge draws of this game. Is this because you didn’t get to try it, or is it something that doesn’t work too well in the PS3 version?
Single player is as you say an entertaining enough romp that’s not without its flaws - the most grating of which is the pop-in of important objects, something that makes driving missions a real pain in the arse. Co-op is utterly brilliant though, I don’t think I’ve ever had a game reduce me to hysterics as quickly as this one has. The potential for carnage (both deliberate and otherwise) is limitless and though the piddly AI makes pulling off co-ordinating attacks a little less satisfying than it might otherwise be it’s still damm good fun.
I was a bit dubious about buying this, especially after it got a bit of a panning from some reviewers, but it’s just so much fun. It’s a game that sets out purely to entertain and I think it succeeds admirably in doing so - admittedly more so in co-op, but then that’s what a lot of the pre-release stuff said anyway. I can’t help but think that some of more negative reviews are either people wildly missing the point or pompous blowhards getting their heads stuck up their arses and pushing the ‘games are serious’ agenda a bit too hard.
As you said, it’s not a life changing experience, but it is really, really good fun and isn’t that the whole point of games in the first place?
