games: American McGee’s Grimm Part 1 - 3

Are you a fan of the dark fairy tale genre made so popular by writers like Angela Carter and Neil Gaiman?

Well, here’s a gamers dose for your PC from American McGee, the chap who brought you the twisted Alice game back in 2000.

Play as Grimm as he darkens up all those saccharine fairy tales we get spoon fed, ’til they resemble something much more appropriate. The game is being released in weekly episodes every Friday over at gametap.com/grimm.

The first taste is free, and 2-8 are free on the day of release, so hurry over and check it out.

I loved Alice. Like, it’s literally one of my favourite games of all time. Although the ending is anticlimactic, it has definitely left a lasting impact on the way I write and such.

However, I can’t help but find the art style of the game to be…somewhat sickening. It’s very Quentin Blake, I think the name is…whoever it was that illustrated for Roald Dahl, and although I loved that as a kid (wait…I don’t think I did, actually…), the idea of it in game form seems…odd.
And with a 17+ recommendation on “the box”, so to speak, I think Mr. McGee has his eye on the wrong audience

Nice review, though. Have you ever considered doing them in HD?
