games: CF Games needs YOU!

Hi guys,

Hope you’re all having a fine and dandy weekend. I just received a fantastic little bundle of games from Square Enix including Space Invaders Extreme and Arkanoid for the DS, so very much looking forward to reviewing those for you.

Anyway, as you know I sometimes do features to break up the regular review schedule and I wanted to know what sort of thing you guys want to see? All suggestions will be considered and gratefully received.

One feature I’m working on at the moment is a list of the ‘worst games ever’ and so would love to know what your nominations for that would be!

You can email your suggestions to me at katharine@channelflip.com (please note the spelling), or find me on facebook (I’m the Katharine Fletcher with the stripey hat!).

Cheers,

Katharine

Hi Katherine,

I would love to find out which are the best/recommended MMO games to play.

Also which are the best game mods out there?

As for the worst game ever award I would have to nominate ‘Rise of the Robot’s - the ultimate example as to why graphics alone can’t make a game great. Even a song by Brian May couldn’t help this game pull itself out of the depths of gaming shoddyness.

Thanks, Steve K

Captain Planet for the NES.

I don’t think I’ve ever played anything more frustrating.

July 26th, 2008 - 7:14pm

My nomination for worst game ever is Night Trap on the 3DO.

As for things I would like to see?

I would quite like more gaming hardware/peripheral reviews.

You could maybe do an all time top 10 once a month or so of a different subject each time. Best/worst gaming weapons, most scary moment, worst translation, most androgynous looking JRPG characters…………that kind of stuff.

I wouldn’t mid seeing the occasional retrospective piece on minor classics that might have been overlooked first time round. Especially relevant for PCs since there must be games from a few years back that I missed first time round and that my ageing PC can handle without too much strain.

I wouldn’t mind a look at mods as well, but there’s a helluva lot of ground to cover and everything seems a bit more fragmented than it was back in the HL/UT days so it’s difficult finding anything with a decent playerbase.

Oh, something thats just occured to me - Channelflip steam group?

I second the steam group!

How about more reviews of PC and PS3 games and also gaming peripherals? How about segment about best party games? Or best puzzle games?

My nomination for worst game ever is ET for Atari, and Ghost Busters for NES. Check out youtube videos of either of them. They reflect very little on the movies that they are supposed to be based on.

As for stuff I would like to see. It would be nice to see what are your picks for best games at E3. I’m not sure if the UK cares about E3 or not.

What do you think about game night or something for xbox live? Where you have a channelflip gold account that people add as a friend, and CF readers can play together one night a month, and you pull out the best parts of the night. Just an idea. May not work out to well, because everyone would need the same game.

How about a review of the gaming review websites? Gamespot, IGN, Gamerankings etc.

Oh, another idea. Brief monthly round up of noteworthy new stuff that’s been released for various platforms to highlight stuff you might have missed.

Oh, worst games ever? Well despite people rose tinted glasses about the 8bit and C64/Speccy era you will find more fundamentally broken games there than on any other platform in any other age. Back when Codies did those 4 for 3 quid gamepack on C64/Amstrad and Speccy they released a pack featuring a game that haunts me to this day. MotoX. Unforgiving is not the word. I never, ever, ever cleared the first stage and neither did any of my mates. Several years ago in Uni I got an emulator and tried again. I still couldn’t clear the first stage. Heinous game. Also anything made in the interactive movie phase in the mid nineties - shit like Phantasmagoria. Urgh, bad, bad times. Though it did also produce the excellent Privateer 2, that featured a young Clive Owen as..er..you. Which in retrospect is sort of cool.

Hey guys - thanks to all of you (and all of you who emailed or facebook messaged) for all the awesome show suggestions and worst games nominations! That will keep me plenty busy for a while. Keep them coming though, the show is made for you so we want to keep it focused on the things you want to see.

I will have a chat to the team about the feasibility of setting up various online gaming groups next time I go in to the CF office and keep you posted.

Btw, as for E3, we do care, but we didn’t go, so I thought it would be a bit false to cover it based purely off what other journalists had written.

I used to play quite a bit of Counter Strike but now I very rarely use steam so I’m a bit of a noob when it comes to the group thing.

I clicked on ‘Join this group’ and absolutely nothing happened :/

I’ve never tried it directly from a browser before… i think it might only work when going through the steam client.

Cool I’ve joined now :)

I’ve been meaning to try Team Fortress 2 for a while so I’m downloading it now.

I will no doubt get my arse served to me on a plate :)

I think the worst game ever is herdy gerdy for the ps2, it’s just torture to play

Also lugi’s mansion for the gamecube , that game was awful. Tecnically, it a mario game, so you’d expect some platforming? WRONG! There isn’t even a jump button. You just fight ghost with a vaccum, like it’s ghost busters. Speaking of ghost busters, for the nes, that game was terrible.

I say you do a top ten of the best pre owned games on last gen and current gen formats because as of late I have been going back buy the odd ps2 game I may have missed out back in the day or early 360 and ps3 titles I might of missed that would be really cool. My entry for worst game would probably have to be def jam icon or spiderman 2 for ds.

I’d be curious to see a comparison of a few high profile games across the four major platforms (PC, PS3, 360 and Wii). Is there any trend there? Does one platform consistently have the best version? Least bugs? Better graphics? Better gameplay?

Most of us can’t afford to buy all four, and with the days of the exclusive game coming to the end, it’s more critical than ever to see which platform really delivers the goods.
