film: Top 10 Movie Quotes in the Universe!

It’s one of the oldest pub chats known to man.

It’s the topic that can divide the best of friends.

It’s the question that any film lover will have asked himself time and time again.

What are the top ten movie quotes of all time?

You’ll have a pretty good idea of your favourites, but will you agree with Justin as he rattles through the greatest lines in film history? Be sure to head into the forums afterwards and let your thoughts be known - and no fisticuffs please.

Imo the single film that contains the greatest amount of brilliant quotes is Withnail & I;

“This place has become impossible. Nothing to eat, freezing cold and now a madman on the prowl outside with eels.”

“No you won’t, you’re not leaving me in here alone. Those are the kind of windows faces look in at.”

“I fail to see my family’s of any interest to you. I’ve absolutely no interest in yours. I dislike relatives in general and in particular mine.”

“We want the finest wines available to humanity. And we want them here, and we want them now!”

“I must say, that represents a level of hypocrisy in you that I’d previously suspected, but not noticed due to highly evasive skills.”

“Even a stopped clock tells the right time twice a day, and for once I’m inclined to believe Withnail is right. We are indeed drifting into the arena of the unwell.”

I feel governor schwarzenegger should appear at least once for the cheese factor.

Hehehehe, “I’ll Be Back”

Spinal Tap!

“Eleven. exactly. Its one louder.”

“You can’t dust for vomit”

“It’s like, how much more black could it be? the answers none, none more black”

“He died in a bizarre gardening accident. Authorities said….best leave it….unsolved.”

Marty DiBergi: “This tasteless cover is a good indication of the lack of musical invention within. The musical growth of this band cannot even be charted. They are treading water in a sea of retarded sexuality and bad poetry.”
Nigel Tufnel: That’s just nitpicking, isn’t it?

Your movie lines are leading two things right now: Jack and shit, and Jack left town.

July 19th, 2008 - 2:39pm

All good lines but I would have liked

“Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya prepare to die”

Any of the rest of my favorites are not big enough to make it into the Top 10 Movie Quotes of All Time in the Whole Universe so will leave it here.

“Over? Did you say over? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no! And it ain’t over now. Cause when the going gets tough? The tough get going! Who’s with me? Let’s go!”

- Blotto, Animal House

Lawrence of Arabia
Auda abu Tayi: [to Lawrence] I carry twenty-three great wounds, all got in battle. Seventy-five men have I killed with my own hands in battle. I scatter, I burn my enemies’ tents. I take away their flocks and herds. The Turks pay me a golden treasure, yet I am poor! Because *I* am a river to my people!

The Treasure of the Sierra Madre
“Badges? We ain’t got no badges! We don’t need no badges! I don’t have to show you any stinking badges!”

Night of the Iguana
Hannah Jelkes: There are worse things than chastity, Mr. Shannon.
Lawrence Shannon: Yes: lunacy and death.

And of course the *this little fishy* bus ride……
Lawrence Shannon: Fantastic ! (not a good quote outside the seen it’self)

You’re never going to get agreement on this subject!

Overall I thought it was a good selection. There’s a lot that I’d love to see in there but “Where does he get those wonderful toys” was the only one from your list that I could bear to drop.

When we got to number 3 I decided that “these aren’t the droids you’re looking for” had to be in the top 2 - but I nodded agreeably at your Star Wars choice.

I agree: “I’ll be back” has to be in the top 10 somewhere.

Spinal Tap’s “Eleven”, “Stop calling me Surely”, “My name is Inigo Montoya”, “Here’s looking at you kid”/”We’ll always have Paris” - all very strong contenders for the top 20.

What about, “Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn”?

Okay then. You’re absolutely right. I could not disagree more with your list. Rather than quibble over what parts/placements I disagree with why not without any further a due or lily gilding just jump right into…”The Top 10 Quotes in the Universe Ever that aren’t Necessarily the Absolute Best but are a bit Stronger in my humble Opinion, so There”

10. “The personal rancor reflected in that remark I do not intend to dignify with comment, however I would like to address your general attitude of hopeless negativism. Consider the lilies of the damn field! Or take Delmer here as your paradigm of hope.” -Everett (O’ Brother Where art Thou) I can think of no phrase that better encapsulates a character or a writing style other than perhaps…

9. “I’ll be back.” -The Terminator(The Terminator) Yes, yes its maybe the most tired cliche this side of Martin Lawrence but many forget that its not the line alone but the subsequent pickup truck crashing into the lobby compliments of our stalwart villain that gives this gem its timeless punch.

8. “You should have let me see her. We should have settled this as men, not with fire.” The Operative(Serenity) I can’t say enough about this movie and if I try I’ll say too much. There for I will say nothing besides its a fantastic film and this line is sums up a masterfully envisioned/executed villain. All hail the great Chiwetel Ejiofor!

7. “Do you think that’s air your breathing” -Morpheus(The Matrix) The single most provocative wtf moment in a film rife with provocative wtf moments.

6. “Self improvement’s masturbation. Now self destruction…” -Tyler Durden(Fight Club) If you’ve seen this film and still don’t have a strong grasp of what Tyler’s all about you need only reflect on this statement.

5. ” I Have come to chew bubble gum and kick ass. And I’m all out of Bubble gum” -Nada(They Live) In a film bursting at the seams with quotables this one shines as its best. A line that just can’t help but bring about a smile in virtually any situation.

4. “You! Americans! You’re always talking! You say, ‘Let me tell you something,’ and ‘I just want to say this.’ Well you’re dead now, so shut up!”-Unknown (Monty Python:The Meaning of Life) You! Brits! You have an uncanny knack for putting things plainly. This is exemplified in the dialogue in Monty Python and no Monty Python line sticks harder than this one. I could not find the name of the character who delivered it…but then I supposed I could have looked harder.

3. “You shall not pass!” Gandolf the Gray(Lord of the Rings) A great example of perfect symbiotic harmony between writing and delivery.

2. “Gentlemen, you can’t fight in here-this is the war room!” Muffley(Dr. Strangelove) They just don’t very often write ‘em like that anymore. And when they do I imagine the writer usually is told by a studio exec. something like “I don’t get it and neither will the audience.”

1. “Try not. Do or do not. There is no try.” -Yoda(The Empire Strikes Back) As stunning a revelation as our heroes grand nemesis also being his estranged pop was, can you think of a more confounding headscratcher than this pearl from the galaxy’s most prized indoctrinator?

If you get these references then I’ve made good choices:

“They’re HEEEEEEEEEEEEre.” -

“I’ll be back.” -

“Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father. Prepare to die” -

“There’s NO place like home, there’s no place like home.” -

“HEEEEEEEEEYYYYYYYYYYYY YYYYOOOOOOOOUUUUUUU GGGGGUUUUUUUUYYYYYYYYYYSSSSSSS!” -

“Do or do not. There is no try.”
