games: Etrian Odyssey

Hello there!

Here’s one for all the old-school RPG fans out there.

Today’s show looks at Etrian Odyssey, a DS RPG where you take a party of adventurers into a labyrinth to explore, battle monsters and find treasures and mysteries.

It makes much of the long lost art of map making, and while targeting quite a niche market of gamers Atlus have come up with a really solid game that fans of the genre will love.

Watch my video for the full verdict - enjoy!

Hi Katharine,

Great review as usual. Your voice over was only coming out of one speaker though. The same problem can be heard on Wil’s last video too. Don’t want to come across as being picky, but it did make you difficult to understand when the game sounds were playing.

you dont often get the chance to see a new game on the market that is so old skool . i think game makers should think about bringing back this classic aproach to games once more

Just out of interest Katharine are you still planning on doing a review of MGS4?

Katherine:

Which Etrian Odyssey are you reviewing? In the US, (at Amazon), there’s Etrian Odyssey (released May 7, 2007), and Etrian Odyssey: Heroes of Lagaard (released June 17, 2008). The cover art on these two titles don’t match the quick shot of your packaging.

As usual, your glittery prose is delightful. Appellation, anyone?

Norbit - thanks for reminding me! I have been meaning to but new games keep coming in… Will get to it asap!

Thank you Jim! As for your question, it’s Etrian Odyssey I. EO II: Heroes of Lagaard hasn’t been released in the UK yet. Strange that the cover art doesn’t match, I guess they changed it for the UK release.

Great review this was one of my favourite titles from last year and I’m busy working through the sequel at the moment. Importing truely is FTW!
