film: Cloverfield

J.J. Abrams is the hot Hollywood talent of the latter part of the decade so far. He has given us TV hits in the form of Alias and Lost; he’s given us big screen action in the shape of Mission Impossible 3, and he’s also helming the latest Star Trek action movie.

Somewhere in between all that he’s managed to find time to produce Cloverfield, a monster movie that’s best described as a cross between Blair Witch and Godzilla.

Watch the video for my verdict, the usual hilarity, and the genius of Piggy Piggy Snack Snack.

me being a person who doesnt get travel sick, all i can say about this move is “motion sickness”. I mean it got so bad at times that i had to stair away from the screen for a moment to centre my self!

I was weirdly immune to the shakycam here. Along with pointlessly quickly cut fight scenes it’s something that generally narks me, but it was mostly ok here. I think Empire got a little carried away, but I honestly enjoyed the film. It’s derivative and the characters are pretty bland, so maybe the fact that it feels fresh says more about what else is out there than the qualities of the film itself. It’s a fun enough romp and the monster and its skittering offspring are genuinely strange, threatening and pretty decent design wise. I’d say four stars - it’s derivative yes, but it’s well put together and entertaining, unlike that godawful ‘zilla remake from years back.

I’ll have to check out The Host as I’ve not seen it yet.

I thought it was pretty poor really. To me a monster film only really works if you care a bit about the people under threat but I couldn’t care less about any of them.

The Host on the other hand is fantastic but the I am a fan of Joon-ho Bong and Kang-ho Song.

BTW if you like The Host check out their previous collaboration ‘Memories of Murder’ which is a brilliant and darkly comic thriller about cops trying to catch a serial killer in rural Korea.

I personally enjoyed this film. The subway scene was terrifying. While it is not original in the plot, it is one of the better monster movies to come out in many years.

I watched this on a recent flight and, as Justin points out, it’s OK - a reasonable enough way to spend 90 minutes, especially when the only alternative is reading the inflight magazine.

Watching it when traveling is also a good mechanism for avoiding motion sickness, as you are actually in motion and that double bluffs the brain into thinking is tickity-boo.

As for Piggy Piggy Snack Snack - you may be a repeat purchaser, but will it repeat on you? Bacon flavor crisps always come back to haunt me after 30 minutes then hang around for hours.

And Justin, please don’t try any more accents - really.

Would have to recommend the Northern Irish Tayto’s, especially the cheese & onion flavour!

Switched off @ 02:10 guess I need to watch a few more to get the flow of said movie critic.

I actually enjoyed the movie.

Ignoring the cliches and the rest. I thought it was a thoroughly enjoyable movie.

I’m sure a traditional steadycam directed version following a bunch of hobo’s seeking to rescue one of the hobo members dogs would not have had quite the same impact.

No JJ fanboy here but I do like a new dynamic he brings to already tried and tested genres.

@ Norbit : Cheers for mentioning the Host, watched it tonight. Brilliant stuff, rather demented, but brilliant anyway.

I am not a monster movie fan, but this one was not too bad, mostly because I grew up in Manhattan and it’s always interesting to see film of your old neighborhood invaded by multi-limbed impervious monsters from the deep, then shot to pieces by the army.
Going against it were the 20-something protagonists, who were annoying as f**k. It came perilously close to one of those movies where the audience WANTS the heroes to be eaten, just to make the bad dialogue stop.
