web: Goombah

For today’s show, Iyaz and Rob check out Goombah, a site that is designed to give you music recommendations based on what’s in your iTunes library.

Can it do the job in the face of stiff competition from sites like Last.fm? Check out the verdict on video.

a good idea indeed tho seems like way too much hassle. I would recommend last.fm, similar idea tho.

Tony, does Last.FM allow you to download tracks?

Cant say i’ve been the biggest user of last.fm cause i’m not a fan of it uploaded my listening habits. Anywho, from what i’ve seen it allows you to listen to full tracks (if not clips) with the option of paying for the mp3 / wma download.

I really dont like these guys - i delete their shows when they come up in iTunes without watching.

Hi Richard, can you provide any constructive feedback beyond that? Thanks! -Wil

I can’t see the benefit of this above last.fm, which does everything this does, with a quicker download, less faff and no reliance on iTunes.

Does it watch your listening habits or just check what you’ve got in your library? The nice thing about last.fm is that it builds up a picture based on what you listen to rather than what you’ve got.

The best thing I’ve seen about Goombah is that it provides free downloads of some mp3s. I’ll look into it more to see how it works and get back to you soon!

Also, I think that a lot of questions about Goombah can be answered by the FAQ available here:

From the FAQ:

“Goombah analyzes the music and play patterns in music libraries to determine what mix of music people really like.” http://www.goombah.com/fAQ.html#goombah1

Guess it used the itunes play counts or something, would be nice if there was a winamp plugin available…

Goombah sounds like far too much effort when there’s Last.fm!
Please oh please guys sort out that audio on Bob and Iyaz’s episodes though, just a noise gate, or de-hiss, or something, anything! Argh!

I like Goombah since it gives you free mp3 downloads (and I don’t think Last.FM does). With all this talk of Last.FM maybe we’ll feature them.

Also, Hugo — the audio. Trust me, we’re working on it. New audio equipment is coming to save the day. It might be a couple of episodes from now, so hang in there. If you can help with the audio, give me an e-mail at finitecomedy@gmail.com and we’ll work something out.

Last.fm doesn’t do download, but it does let you preview tracks on the webpage. I guess it’s really down to whether you’re an apple/itunes person or not.

It’s definitely worth a look.

Last.fm does do free downloads of certain tracks. I’ve downloaded quite a bit of material from various artists. For example Club 8 (first one I could find). http://www.last.fm/music/Club+8
