tech: Dalek Security Camera

This might look like your average remote controlled Dalek toy, but nothing could be further from the truth.

The toy has been retro-fitted with a miniscule pinhole spy cam by a London security firm, which has lent it to us to have a play with. The Dalek sits on your desk and beams pictures back over 100m to a radio receiver, which then shows you what the Dalek sees on a 10″ LCD monitor.

It’s a seriously cool bit of kit, made all the more interesting by its uniqueness. Building one of these will cost you a minor fortune, especially given that the pinhole security camera is professional quality.

Enjoy, Who fans!

“…Building one of these will cost you a minor fortune…”

What?

Those cameras are super cheap. You can pick them up here for under $300.

Never mind Big Brother is watching you, little Davros is watching you!

Always wondered what happened to you when you went under the radar and left Bit-Tech Wil!

Awesome show mate, got a bit of a back catalogue to go through now! Hehehe

I hope to see great things of Channel Flip!

dalek toys are about £30 and the camera about another £60 so this could be a lot cheaper.

I’ll definitely be adding these to my Doctor Who toys store!

[…] While the secrecy is most likely related to shame and embarrassment more than danger and intrigue, the “toy” is actually a pretty impressive piece of hardware. The camera can transmit high quality streaming video to a flat panel-equipped base station over 300 feet away, where it is recorded to a hard drive for playback and/or incrimination. Because of the top secret nature of the project the price is a matter of speculation, but Harris estimates a build cost in excess of $1,500, which means that there must be some serious shit going down at Doctor Who conferences. Kitting out daleks with extra toys is something our members do quite often, over on the Project Dalek Forum. This little chap would fit right in. The main difference is that most of our daleks are full size replicas, rather than scale models. I’ll make sure he gets a plug, over on the site.

Hey Twit boy!

What is the big deal with this?
I get the Dalek geek factor but this is a remote control toy to which someone added a spycam. Been there.

There are TONS of R2D2 remote control toys out there, from 39$ to 999$ (and probably more) and adding a little cam is the first thing geeks do when the get one. I did when i got one a few years ago.
Google ’spy cam pinhole wireless’ for an idea of prices and check out how many sites offer tutorials on how to make your own R2-D2 pinhole camera.

How is this any different or better?

Whether its on R2, organisms from the planet Skaro or Wall-E, the pinciple is the same.

Doesnt mean I wouldnt want one if you were having a draw. Hint, hint.
