games: Metal Gear Retrospective

This week sees the release of one of the most eagerly anticipated games of the year - Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, a game whose importance and vision cannot be underestimated.

But trying to get a handle on the story of Hideo Kojima’s epic saga - which has spanned over 20 years of game releases - is pretty darn tricky, so here’s a quick recap of the series so far. Unlike Konami, we’ve managed to squeeze the story into just a few minutes, rather than 90!

Thanks to all the people we spoke to in the crowd at the HMV signing event, sorry we couldn’t include everyone’s comments!

Keep your eyes peeled for the review which should be up here next week, in the meantime, enjoy the game!

Did not follow the story much of MGS, but seeing the massive hype for MGS4 and the amazing graphics shown, it might just be one the games I will be picking up.

I have played the second game before and know the game is a stealth action sort of game and the main character is Solid Snake himself.

After watching this video, I can see the storyline is a little complicated and much deeper than I had thought, but I have always been into the stealth sort of games and just by looking at the graphics of MGS4 makes me want to add it to my list already. Nice retrospective!

Dear Katharine,

I have watched your videos ever since you made that Zelda one!

-Is this your full time job now?

-Has anyone ever noticed you yet in real life?

-Have you really played any metal gears?

Thanks and keep up the excellent work! Alot of people view your videos even if it might not seem like it!

Good to see you up and running again Katharine.

I got my copy of MGS4 through the door this morning and have played the bejesus out of it :)

And there was me thinking you couldn’t explain the MGS backstory without a series of handouts and a lengthy powerpoint presentation. I do find it a mite odd that people rave about how good story is when it seems to be a convoluted mess of retconned gibberish, though I think it may be something to do with the generally piss poor quality of storytelling that we get with games in the first place.

Pretty sweet to see the ‘random member of the public’ interviewed suddenly showing up here as well :D

Hi Singh, thanks for the support!

This has been my full time job since we started in October.

I’ve only been spotted once in real life, but it doesn’t really count as it was someone who had been at a talk Wil gave on online digital media the previous night. I am entirely happy to remain anonymous though!

I haven’t played any of the Metal Gears (I was five when the first one came out, and didn’t have any consoles when I was growing up), but when I was reading up on the backstory to get ready for playing MGS4 I realized how confusing it was gong to be for other people in my position (and even came across online posts from people who HAD played all the games and who were really confused) and so thought that some sort of history/recap of both the story and the game itself might be interesting and help people feel a little less intimidated about jumping in with 4. Obviously in a podcast of this length I’ve had to really skim the surface though, and hopefully this game will inspire people to go back and play the other ones or at least read up on the backstory in more depth. If I have made any mistakes, do please let me know!

So far I am incredibly impressed with 4…

Thanks for writing :)

Erk, sorry guys, moderation is a bit slow and comments are a little out of synch. When I wrote half of this stuff wasn’t here! We’ll work on that.
