tech: Acer Aspire One Launch

For this video, we trekked down into London for the launch of Acer’s new ‘netbook’ machine, a sexy little bit of kit dubbed the Aspire One. It’s a mini PC, along the lines of the Acer EEE, but with a significantly nicer design and a price tag that will make you take notice - for the right reasons. Come join me for some first impressions and a few beauty shots. Of the computer, that is.

I just have a problem with the price of these things. For $50 to $100 more I could pick up a budget laptop with much more power and usefulness. If I could pick up one of these for say $200 I would get one since I see these as more of a toy or gadget than a real computer. It’s the kind of thing I could see the kids getting grandma so that she could get e-mails.

Mark is right, the price is to high (about $400). For the money I could get a Fully loaded older laptop that would run circles around this toy.

I think you guys are missing the point on this laptop. No, I think you have heard the reasons why they make this form factor but cant see a need in your own lives for it. It’s a nice second laptop for when you are on the go and you don’t need to lug a full featured notebook. Yea you can go buy a fullsize at that price but that reasoning defeats the purpose of this thing. If it does not fit for you ok then, I cant wait to get one for sitting around the house and all I want to do is browse some sites while watching tv.

Great vid.

I agree with mojofrojo. I have an eeepc as a second computer. Its small size and weight make it very useable and I take it everywhere I go. The relatively low power spec is fine for email, document editing and web access and I use my desktop to do all my heavy duty work. I’d definitely consider the aspire one next time I’m looking for a netbook.

Wil…
Stop masturbating over the iPhone when youre on Twit and give the netbooks a little lovin’ since it obviously needs it on this side of the pond.
Millions of low cost laptops are being sold and the west coast media cant get their heads out of their ass because they ‘dont see the need for it’.
This form factor is the equivalent to the Wii which we are told by pundits is too weak a machine, has no games and people dont like playing yet is still going on strong.

Sure, netbooks were the hit of this years Taiwan Computex show but the colonic loving SF crowd could care less.

I got one for the wife 2 weeks ago and she loves it. Even more so when she saw the price her sister paid for her HP Mininote and the $370 price I paid for hers.
Her Nokia N95 is for quick 2-3mins info but this has replaced her Toshiba Protege when she goes out because she is always afraid to carry into cafes or out in the open.
When she wants to spend hours working then she uses her laptop but for 45-60mins at a time.. amazing.

The Linux interface is easy to use and why shouildnt it be? My parents are both in the 70s and run Kunbutu and PCLinuxos (Btw, in Taiwan, Linux is for housewives and XP is for geeks!). This means I dont have to waste my time doing the anti-virus, adware/malware/trojan dance. It just works.

As for extra space, I just bought a 8Gb USB key for 29$ (and they had SD cards for the same size/price).

So seriously, next time you pop in to the Brain Toniq swilling crowd, introduce them to the concept of notebooks. Or just wait until someone sticks a fruit logo on top and then they’ll notice.

PS: this week’s show was weak compared to the previous TWIT but you once again were the most compelling and well prepared of the guests. Youve become the first guy off the bench when the regulars are not there. Not bad for a guy we still dont understand 100%.
