games: Devil May Cry 4

Just when you thought the Devil would make up his mind, he’s back with the fourth part of the action-platform series, and the first outing on the latest platforms. Gorgeous visuals and some awesome FMV abound - but 20 minutes to load?

Great review, will you be doing Lost Odyssey next week? I really want to know what you think about it. :)

Hey Katherine! I love your reviews! How about doing one on Endless Ocean for the Wii?

wow, I totally agree with you. I rarely have those “exactly!” moments when watching or reading a review, but I had lots here. Great review!

I only rented the game for one day, still I want to say a few things:

- As this one is only the second DMC game I played, and I didn’t really play much of the other game, I chose that “automatic” mode.
Problem A: I just chose “automatic” because it sounded more beginner-friendly. There’s no explanation on the menu-screen or anywhere in-game what will become “automatic”.
Problem B: It really sucks that you can’t change that mid-game. I would have like to switch to “normal” in between just to give it a try, and perhaps switch back if it’s just too much for me to cope with.

- I had the exact same thing going through my head in some of the fight cutscenes, especially that first one after Nero leaves that church / theater thing: “Why isn’t it me fighting those guys?” Sure, the cutscenes look absolutely gorgeous, but it’s a bit awkward when I feel like watching another guy play and wanting to play myself :)
- Overall I found the camera to be okay. Not great, but okay. But in some spots it’s just infuriating, just like you said. I actually stopped playing in a room filled with spikes at the ceiling and some of those glowing orbs that you have to grab with that demon arm to propel yourself around. My main problem was that I often couldn’t see the next glowing orb until it was too late: I grabbed it, and ended up on the spikes in the ceiling, being thrown down to the room below and having to kill the same few guys again and again and again
I actually never had a game stopping my fun that fast. After playing for several hours having a blast it took the game about 5 minutes to get me to quit it. (5 or 6 tries of that scene)
I guess if I had bought the game I’d have given it a try again the next day, but I had to return it then, which is kind of a bummer. I guess I’ll check it out again when I have more time to play again.

Again, nice review, makes me want to try the game again overall.

I hated the Camera in this game i would be jumping and it would change right as i would almost reach my destination, and because of the change in camera angle i would fall and have to start all over. Im glad i rented this crappy game. didn’t have to waste 60$ on it.

Next time you try it, don’t bother with the automatic mode. On human difficulty with the tutorial on it’s a pretty easy move set to at least get the basics down with (and you can always pull up the skill list in the pause menu to remind yourself of any combos). I’d hardly played any DMC before this game and didn’t need to use automatic beyond trying it out for about ten minutes for the review.

I know exactly the room you got stuck in. The first time through that level I cleared it in two goes not really knowing what I’d done. The second time through I was there for forty minutes. I kid you not. The camera is infuriating when you can’t line up jumps or directionality changes mid-move. grrr. it is a damn good-looking game though!

We’re in an era where consoles can deliver near FMV-quality graphics in real time. Why are we seeing FMV? And why are cameras STILL an issue after so many 3rd-person action-adventure games? This is something we should have been beyond by now.

And your PS3 died? Ouch. That’s too bad to hear. I hope it’s fixed before the next big PS3 game.

To be fair to Sony, although the beast died, it was replaced very quickly (they sent a courier and let us swap our hard drive to a new machine) so kudos for that.

Nice review. I played through the game twice and really enjoyed this game.

RawSteelUT: I agree with what you said there RawSteelUT. We are living in a digital age and FMV should be in real time. But in my opinion, I find FMV to be a lot smoother when they are not in real time and I enjoy them a lot more. Its great though if FMV were in real time and super smooth without lags, but with most of the games I’ve seen - there are lags when FMV are done in real time and are captured in 60FPS.
