games: MAME

We all have fond memories of our favourite arcade cabinets - so why not pick up this emulator from MAMEDev.org and some of the legit ROMs to go with it?

Enjoy the retro vibe and watch out for reviews of Devil May Cry 4 and Conflict: Denied Ops next week.

Hope you enjoyed the episode. Now for some shameless plugging of another of my projects… The t-shirt I’m wearing is courtesy of Milton400, Christ’s College Cambridge’s year long series of events and resources celebrating John Milton’s 400th birthday. If you’re interested, check out http://www.christs.cam.ac.uk/milton400
The project I was involved in is http://www.christs.cam.ac.uk/darknessvisible an educational website introducing readers to Milton and Paradise Lost. Thanks!

Now this is the stuff that I’d much rather see than reviews of demos. Reviews of emulators, games being re-released on xBox live, machinima, etc. are far cooler.

Hi Tom - as yet there are no t-shirts, but I quite like making shirts so I’ll have a think about designing one and see how financially feasible it will be to get a small run made. As you asked first, I’ll sign yours :) The pink thundercats sign is just that. There’s a design cut into the glass and a light shone down from the top of the unit. It was a birthday gift a couple of years back from my mate Dave (who used to kick my ass at Smackdown V Raw, but could never defeat my SoulCalibre skillz).

Aha, suddenly the oblique literary references (I’m sure you mentioned something about MIlton in another review) become somewhat clearer!

I like a bit of MAME and find myself returning to it every six months or so in order to relive some arcade pleasure or other. The last one was a NeoGeo phase where I played King Of Monsters and various fighting games. Right now it’s Sunset Riders and the AvP side scrolling beat ‘em thingy. I’m pretty sure there was a Turtles one a Simpsons one and an X Men one that were all pretty decent. It does lose a bit when you’re mashing away on a keyboard instead of huddling round a cabinet with three of your mates though, which is why it’s nice to see some of it being brought back on Live, complete with multiplayer over t’internet.

Great review, and that was also a very well written biography of John Milton.

@ tom s williams: the pink thing by the side of the t.v. is a glass light version of the thundercats logo!

There aren’t any links on Capcom’s website. Where exactly do they offer their roms for sale?

Also, I’m surprised you haven’t mentioned the pad support on these things. To say that playing Street Fighter II with a keyboard and mouse is difficult would be an understatement.

And this iconic one of course;

That glass tablet with the pink light shining within looks like one of those laser etched glass/crystal paperweights that have cycling colors pouring in them to show the art. Also looks like a Thundercats emblem.

An example of some geeky artwork (I say that with nothing but endearment in mind). I wish I had access to that room just to see it all in person, my pitiful toy and collectible collection is…well…pitiful :p.

Anywho, nice work as usual Katherine. Wouldn’t have minded a bit more depth on configuration options, but I think you covered the necessary bits. Probably good not to overload the minds of the viewers new to M.A.M.E. anyway.

Thanks for all the feedback guys (and to those of you who went and checked out my other site!).

Norbit - you rule! :)
Raw SteelUT - you are totally right. It does take a while to get used to keyboard control and it’s never as comfortable as a cabinet or pad.
Check out the links page on the MAME site http://mamedev.org/links.html for sourcing ROMs. They link to http://www.hanaho.com/ who include some licensed Capcom ROMs with their hotrod joystick. I’m sure there was a Capcom CD, but I wrote the episode a while back and can’t remember where I saw it. I will keep looking and post again when I find the details.

First of all, the correct way to pronounce Mac OS X is “Mac OS Ten”. Sounds strange if you say “X”, I think.

Otherwise, great episode. When I first discovered the world of Emulation, it was through SNES9X (which, incidentally i pronoucne “S-Nes nine-X”) and I had trouble with a keyboard, at first. Now I actually prefer a keyboard because controls just seem crisper compared to a 3rd party pad. Has anyone connected one of these emulators to a HDTV yet? With the proper smoothing (say SAI3X) SNES games could look stunning.

Haha, maybe I should point out now that, I am an anti-prescriptivist when it comes to language usage.

Both ‘OSX’ and ‘OXten’ are in common usage. I don’t think you can say that either one is the ‘correct’ version. Actually, given that they’ve used a Roman numeral, ‘OS decem’ might be best.

Also lots of people ellide S-NES (2 syllabes) to SNES (1 syllable), and I have no problem with that. Although I do concede that the ‘Snes’ in the other episode was actually a typo and it should be capitalized.

Oh, and just so you know, I also tend to call X-B-L-A (4 syllables), X-blah (2). Hope no-one stops watching because of these little linguistic rebellions. Language is there to be played with and this is hardly a universal hubbub wild!

Kekoa - neat idea on hooking it up to an HD screen. Will give it a shot!

March 1st, 2008 - 3:47pm

Haha, XBLAH! I’ll use that!

Right, it’s a roman numeral. I’m American (statesian?) and I didn’t know X could be voiced as decem in the UK. But it’s Latin, makes sense. Strictly speaking though, it should be Ten because Apple says so, :P
Anyway I like your cute pronunciations.

So you’ll give the HD thing a shot? Wow, awesome. Looking forward to hearing how it goes!

take care,
Kekoa
(pronounced kaykoa)
(it’s hawaiian so…)
