games: Burnout Paradise

This latest instalment in Paradise City marks a departure for the Burnout series - changing from a series of events to a massive open world where you can choose what you want to do, when you want to do it. I spent a very happy time cruising around, unlocking new cars and generally causing some crash-mode carnage.

Watch the show to get my verdict on the full game, not to mention a look at my hot stuff driving skillz!

I have to say that I have the game and really enjoy it. Good review as always, however I do have a few points to make. Firstly, if you want to quit a race you know you’re never going to win, just pull up to a stop and wait a few seconds and the challenge is cancelled, so you can quickly turn around and go and try it again, in addition to this you can always just enter showtime and have a big accident instead, this also ends an event. Secondly, it’s an open world where you don’t need to complete certain events, While some events have a better purpose than others (Completing Burning Routes unlocks a modded version of the car the Burning route is for) most races are just to level up your license, so you don’t need to do the one you failed, just pull up at another set of lights and go again.
Nice driving skills, however have you managed to join the millionaires club yet?

Right-hand drive? The yanks drive left hand drive cars don’t they? Anyways great episode, and I’ll seriously consider getting this for my Xbox 360.

Oh by the way, do you drive at all katharine?

The lack of a retry option is a gamebreaker. Boourns.

You finally reviewed a game this time, I was getting tired of the demos.

What’s this Super Star mode you talk of??

It’s called Showtime!! ;) I’ll let you off though, as your right on the money with the review, and every driving game has been missing Guns N Roses

Dear peoples,

Ad department, …won’t be coming back if you-all do not stop the force-me-to-watch ads.

After Katharine works hard to give a review, I am thinking about what she said, and then, wham, you-all are all about the money, interrupting, confusing, and frustrating everything. I would bet if you-all could, then the key word is: would, have the show interrupted midstream, nice; so, so… so get a life- or, bye-bye! LOL

Thanks Katharine… ;)
I will get this one for my nephew. However, my mother still has not even tried the Playstation 3, except for Blu-rays; furthermore, Tools of Destruction is still unwrapped, hum. She does like the plasma T.V., though.

Sincerely,
Joseph

Jazza - Hahaha - OOPS! This is just a small taste of the world inside my head where everything gets its own made up name, especially when I can’t remember what it’s called in real life - i should really remember to check for that doing the show though!

JT - Americans drive right hand drive, as do most of Europe. England is special/difficult. As for me, I’ve been driving since I was 17, but haven’t owned a car or lived at home for a while.

First of all, I really liked the new music during the title sequence. You guys should make this a new thing. The old music was getting, well, “old” anyway.

Great episode as usual. Looks like a very fun game, and the game footage was very well matched up with Katherine’s explanation. Makes me want to buy the game. Stellar episode!

I think there’s a misunderstanding between JT and Katharine:
Katharine probably means that the cars in Europe and the US drive on the right side of the street, while JT probably is talking about the position of the steering wheel inside the car, which is left in those areas ;) Just wanted to help clear that up.

Nice review overall. I liked the demo of the game, although I thought that this free-roaming of the city was pretty unnecessary and it left me with the fear that perhaps the challenges aren’t as well designed as they could be in favor of that free-roaming aspect. Also, the missing crash challenges I especially enjoyed in Burnout 2 is a bummer.
Perhaps I’ll still get it, though, the handling just is lots of fun and the speed is just exhilarating.

Great review of Rez. Totally agree on the score. It’s an incredible experience!

But the one thing you mentioned with cramping hands, and after watching the vid, I think you’re slightly missing out on the main shooting mechanic. Hold down the fire button and highlight up to 8 enemies. Let go and all 8 will be killed. Really helps with hand crampage. ;)

Hey Joseph, thanks for the comment. I can understand the frustration with ads, but let me explain: there are a lot of costs involved with running ChannelFlip and the money to cover that has to come from somewhere. We really don’t like the idea of interrupting the videos like some people do, or having overlays on top of them, so we opted for post-roll as this was the least invasive. I hope you can understand and see this as a reasonable compromise between enthusiasm for our subjects and the necessities of running a business. At this stage in the career of a small start-up, clicking on and watching ads isn’t making us stackloads of money, but simply enabling us to keep afloat.

I am glad your mother is enjoying the BluRay (and hey, Sony seems to have won that race so not a bad investment). I’m sure you will persuade her round to the gaming side of things one day.

Best wishes, Katharine

Hi there Katharine and team (how many are there in your team?).
Love the show even though I’ve only just discovered your site.
As you have recently said to Joseph, startups need to fund themselves somehow. I totally agree, it’s something that can annoy users viewing the content but is a necessary evil all the same. I only know this all too well as I currently work with a company called Simply Media. We have a range of web tv channels, the best of which is avenue 11; music news & reviews.
If you check the web link - http://www.avenue11.com you’ll see what I mean.
I am telling you this because the production team are currently in the process of re-shaping our channels and adding new content/channels to our portfolio. One topic which has always been on the end of my tongue is gaming (yep, I’m a bit of a fanatic and TF2 2Fort is currently ruling my life).
I realise you have a few other channels and would like to get in touch with channelflip.com itself.
If you or channelflip.com would like to know any more, please e-mail me at the address supplied or contact us through the website. Sorry for sounding all business like - keep up the groovy work!
Thanks Katharine and all the best,
Niall

Nifty.
I’ve got this, but I just found myself getting very, very bored with it after a couple of weeks of on off play. It’s a nice game, but it just lacks something and you find yourself increasingly missing crash mode. Open world is all well and good, but not being able to warp round the map kill the quick game appeal of Burnout - which I though was mostly the point in the first place. It’s not apparent at first because you’re having so much fun, but after a while it just become bloody tedious.

Still, the new bikes and day/night cycle in the new updates may tempt me back.
