games: The Club demo

Hey guys,

Got a good one for you here. I’ve been playing the demo of Bizarre’s The Club, which gives a new take to the F/3PS genre. I am really loving this and jonesing for the full length version which should be out mid February in the states and March here in Europe.

It’s going to be multiplatform, but I’m playing the 360 demo here.

This week will also see a review of Omega 5 and a look at the Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War, Soulstorm demo.

Take a look!

Looks very nice but it reminds me a bit of UT, from the idea I mean…

And I think it would work better on a PC, but I’m a PC Gamer, so whatever.

thx for the preview!

greetings from Germany,

Why is the screen so small?

Have you had a chance to give the multiplayer a go yet? I believe it’s only split-screen in the demo, which is a bit of a missed opportunity, but better than nothing.

I’m still waiting for this to download because, like an idiot, I d/l’d the Fuel of War demo first. Heed my warning : It’s crap. Takes everything developers should have learnt about shooters in the past ten years and totally ignores it. It feels so very, very horrid. Floaty and nasty with useless guns and generic design. For added annoyance the controls are different enough from Halo and CoD to really mess you up and it squanders the vaguely interesting plot premise quite horribly. Boo hiss.

I am quite interested in how the Club pans out, especially in multiplayer, whether it’s actually fun or merely a tool for the sort of people who do literally anything to get to the top of the scoreboard and have a gigantic tantrum when they don’t.

Good show, as usual.

First let me say, this is an amazing show. It’s one of the few sites I check up on every few days. I would have dropped this message into a fan-mail link but I didn’t see any address.

Ms. Fletcher really seals the deal. For some ridiculous reason it’s almost rare to see an intelligent face put on video reviews like this. I guess I don’t keep up with reviews and blogs enough (though I’m sure a lot of gamers don’t being how much of a laugh some things are) so I’m sure there’s others out there, but she’s smart, articulates her words - and most importantly seems like she enjoys and understands what she’s talking about. That’s what really matters at the end of the day.

Keep up the great work.

P.S. I really look forward to some more emulation episodes.

Another First class review,

Intresting idea a mix of a racing game dynamic and arcade shooter classic, hmm have to keep my eyes on this one
Looking forward for the Soulstorm demo.
Thanks again for the review.

Finally got round to playing this last night and it’s actually pretty fun. It’s a bit clunky feeling, which is a pain for something so fast-paced and I’ve still not mastered it, but desperately trying to keep your combo going by any means necessary is quite entertaining. I’m not certain I’ll buy it, what with Burnout so close, but if the reviews are generally favourable then I’ll certainly think about it.

Re Screen - We’re not sure why, but the screen seems to be coming up smaller than usual in all episode videos from Tron onwards. We’re looking into it, but so far there isn’t an obvious reason. We’ve double checked and they’ve definitely been uploaded at the right size. It’s a bit of a mystery! As far as I know, it’s only a problem in firefox, so if you want to see it better try opening another browser, or watching it from the channelflip mainpage, which still has large videos. Sorry about that! Anyone experiencing problems on a different browser or who knows what the dealio is, drop me a line at katharine@channelflip.com. Cheers.

Zeis, I know what you mean about the UT comparison, but they do play pretty differently. The Club will be coming to PC, PS3 and 360, so you can play too! I don’t think there’s a PC demo yet though.

Cheers for the heads up of Fuel of War Schmung - sounds ‘orrible. Why would people mess with FPS controls like that? It doesn’t show originality, just stupidity! Depending on what else is out that week, I’m hoping to give the full version of the Club a proper review, particularly looking at the multiplayer as that will be such a big part of it. There will always be arseholes online, and they will almost certainly be drawn to this, but I still think it’ll be an exciting game. I haven’t played the split screen yet, but Wil brought in a spare controller today so I look forward to getting pwnd by the headshot king later on!
