games: Amiga Emulation

Wooooo Amiga!

As those of you who read the message boards will know, I have been playing around with various emulators of late and am putting together a series of episodes to let you know which ones work well, how to install them and looking back at some classic games (none of this XBLA Tron rubbish!).

Today we are looking at WinUAE, that’s the best Amiga emulator in its Windows port.

You can download it from Emulator Zone, and get the Kickstart ROMs from freeroms.com, although please note that the ROMs are licensed and if you don’t own an original cartridge or plan on deleting it after 24 hours, you should get a licensed version - like the one included with the Amiga Forever package.

There are lots of places to download ADFs from - a quick Google should turn them up.

Enjoy!

nice episode. Too bad you only showed two games (although both are great and still fun today). But I guess there would be a sheer endless mass of games that would be worthy to show and you just had to make a choice. :) Everybody who goes and gives UAE or WinUAE a try, be sure to check out Turrican (3 games, I like the third one best), classical platform shooter with absolutely awesome music. Also “IK+” (International Karate +) is a fun fighting game, although the controls need some time getting used to. “Spherical” is a fun little puzzle game. “Xenon II” is a vertically scrolling space-ship shooter from the same guys as “Chaos Engine” (the Bitmap Brothers) and definitely worth checking out. Also, another game from the those guys would be “Speedball 2″, an all-time classic mix of Bloodsport and handball, which recently got a not-so-good remake. “Dungeon Master” is also a must-play for everybody who likes a good dungeon crawl, but beware, it’s pretty hard.
Well, there are tons of other great games for the Amiga, I’ll just stop here.

God bless you, Katherine!

I grew up in the Golden Age of Commodore gaming and I’ve been trying FOR YEARS to get a decent emulator working on my PC.

I’ll definitely be trying this. And if I can get IT CAME FROM THE DESERT working then I’ll build a statue of you.

Or, at the very least, be REALLY thankful.

Hey, you should review Peacemaker. It’s a diplomatic game about the Israel-Palestine conflict.

I never had an Amiga but a friend of mine did. The only game I can remember absolutely loving on it was “Hill Street Blues” which was like an early version of the old ‘top down’ Grand Theft Auto games.

Hi there, great review. Personally I’m a massive fan of the Sega Megadrive and the best emulator for this is Kega Fusion http://www.eidolons-inn.net/tiki-index.php?page=Kega (name actually shortened to Fusion now I believe) Which can emulate the Master System, Megadrive, Mega CD, 32X and the Game Gear. Also the full Megadrive package (Console plus 32x and Mega CD) all function as one unit (assuming you have the Bios Files) so if you have an old Mega CD game (it works from your CD drive as well as .ISO images) which worked with all of it, it’ll work the same as it does on the real thing.
Anyway, Back to the Amiga emulator. Here are some games I used to love (I’m afraid I’ve not found the roms for them though), Lotus Turbo Challenge, North and South, Walker (by Psygnosis no less!) and Worms (Much better than the PC version, though it had it’s own limitations).
Thanks for another great show!

So far, I’ve been watching and keep up with the episodes as they are posted, and I’ve enjoyed them thoroughly.

But ROMs and Emulation is a topic that straddles a semi-blurry line between what is legal and what is not. And even assuming nothing but completely legitimate things come out in the Play Digital videos, it can easily and quite often result in encouraging people to start moving into the illegal side of Emulation and Roms, even if unintentionally.

If doing things related to ROMs and emulation is going to become a regular thing here, I’m going to stop visiting the site altogether. This show, this site, does not need this, and it can easily maintain its high quality and unique personality (thanks to Katharine) by covering things that don’t cross into the gray area of the law.

Please, I encourage you to cover classic games. Use XBLA, use PSN, use the Virtual Console, or whatever. But don’t hold shows cover Emulators and Roms. Please, I think it’s going to turn this show and this site into something that you don’t want it to be.

Ah the good auld times, another first class review, you should try out Fusion (game gear, master sys, megadrive, 32x and sega cd emulator) ZSNES (snes) Project64 (N64…Mario64 and zelda are classics) Mame and finally PCSX (playstion 1 emulator)
Always good for a wee trip down memory lane. Looking forward to the next review

Hello.
I love your show. I have been watching since the very beginning. It would be a lot of fun if you reviewed the open source RTS game Spring. http://spring.clan-sy.com/

Best wishes from Sweden

Favourite Amiga games? There were so many… well, I guess I’d have to say Secret of Monkey Island. Most hilarious game ever (though it did make it to the PC). Dungeon Master was also a massive time sink. Populous deserves a mention and all the R-type games.

Dear Katharine & Play Digital,

I’m respectfully requesting that you please consider the issues of Roms and Emulation at hand..

The problem with Roms and Emulation is not the direct issue of “piracy.” It is unlikely that companies are losing revenue/profit when a person downloads an old game, because these games are no longer on the shelf. That would otherwise be piracy, but that is not the issue and the problem.

Downloading an unlicensed Rom is transgression of a company’s intellectual property. Even if you already own a physical copy of the game, it is still legally considered a transgression. The “Delete in 24 hour” rule? This is a bogus rule that is propagated by rom-hosting sites in order to put on some kind of face of legitimacy. The rule is false, it does not exist, and obtaining the unlicensed Rom for any short amount of time is against the law. Even if you own a licensed, legit copy of the game in question.

I’m not posting this because I’m a tightwad that thinks people are “pirating softwarez oh noes!1!!”

I’m posting this because I enjoy the Play Digital episodes, and I care about it and its host website.

There is tons of material out there for Katharine to cover without having to delve into the realm of ROMs. She has been perfectly able to provide a compelling show so far without having to resort to this. There is an endless amount of material out there in the gaming industry for her to do that would be just as worthwhile and interesting to watch her cover than Roms and Emulation, if not more so. Particularly that which does not walk fine legal lines.

But what really bothers me personally is the fact that episodes like this can have the collateral effect of damaging the very industry it seeks to promote. Just skimming over some of the sites linked to from this very webpage themselves contain links that DO lead directly to piracy - links to sites that allow users to directly download image files of current generation consoles. And that’s without even considering whatever reasons current IP holders have against old Rom usage. Furthermore, putting on shows about how to do this and linking to sites that condone other certain things is going to lead to some negative effect in the industry. I don’t want Play:Digital to have any negative effect on this industry, even if remote.

I’m just asking you to please consider the situation… Play:Digital, Katharine, and anyone involved with the site of course doesn’t have to listen to me at all… It’s just that I’ve seen too many good sites get caught up with stuff like this, and ultimately they’ve been off worse as a result in some fashion. The sad thing is that they do not have to do so and can indeed be better off by avoiding the whole mess all together.

* as a side note, copyrights do not enter the public domain just because a game is no longer on the shelf.

** secondly, a few rare instances of ROM download are legitimate, such as Amiga Forever. But this is a special case, and is the exception rather than the rule.

Oh well. Play:Digital, Katharine, and anyone involved with the site of course doesn’t have to listen to me at all. It’s just that I’ve seen too many good sites get caught up with stuff like this, and ultimately they’ve been off worse as a result in some fashion. The sad thing is that they do not have to do so and can indeed be better off by avoiding the whole mess all together.

I think you should review the arcade classic, “Micheal Jackson’s Moonwalker,” for for the Sega System 18. I believe that was the single most important milestone for game development and is a strong nominee for “Best game ever created.”

Dear PDigitalfan. Thank you for your posts. I am not about to get into an online discussion about the morality or legality of emulation, but I wanted to let you know that we have read them. I am grateful for the support you have shown so far, and respect your right to your opinion on the issues at hand. Thank you for pointing out some of the legal issues with ROMs, I hope our viewers will find that useful. As you will know from the episode, I have tried to present the legal situation as I make it out so that viewers can make informed decisions, including linking to legal ways of downloading licensed ROMs, and starting with the Amiga which is not such a legal minefield and has lots of abandonware available. I’m afraid that we have different views about subjects suitable for coverage and about the role of a video game journalist, but just because I am not in agreement with you, and not prepared to divert the content of my show from an area I am interested in, I didn’t want you to think you hadn’t been heard. Regards, Katharine

I’m not annoyed with the legality of emulation, but are you really saying that Rick Dangerous is one of the top two Amiga games ever? It’s full of annoying sudden unexplainable deaths and is very repetitive. I’d almost say it’s worse than Beowolf, but it’s slightly better than that.

And since when did Amiga’s have cartridges?

Katharine

Ben - you’re right about the repetitiveness of RD, but it still had a lot of charm. And I don’t remember any inexplicable deaths, although off screen spikes were a bit annoying before you learnt the level. Anyway, I’m not saying it was one of the best, just that it was one of my favourites - bear in mind I was about 8 when I was playing this!

Also - you totally got me on the cartridges. I got the legal information from somewhere that used that term and should have questioned it more rigorously - sorry!

After 5 years any game software hardware invention is nil in the eye of the law .intellectual property is somthing that was made from scratch and can not be made in any other way.PD the bit map brothers used software created from other sources i end my leagle note on this point after 5 years everything is free or as Micro soft says we improve it and respect the devs behind the original we would not be here if it wasnt for them.

There’s been a PC remake of one of my favorite (yes, I’m a yank) Amiga games from ye olden days, Another World - aka Out of this World. You can get a demo at the author’s site, http://www.anotherworld.fr/anotherworld_uk/ .

Here’s hoping we see something similar with Flashback and Syndicate (yay, Gauss Gun!). It’s amazing how much atmosphere these older games had, hardware limitations be damned.

Wings! What a classic. You can watch the intro here.

I never did master the strafe runs, darn it!

Sensible Soccer - hours of competition with my best friend.

Prince of Persia - blew us away when we first saw it.

Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge - HOURS of time devoted.

The list goes on…
