games: Gish

Hello there!

Today we’re getting mucky in the sewers of Dross with the spunky little tar-ball, Gish. Available for just $5 to download on the STEAM network (until Thurs 10th when it goes back up to $10), this is a great little indie gem. I’m useless at it, but definitely think the multiplayer alone makes it worth the download.

Enjoy!

nice review. I had the exact same problems with the controls of Gish. Even after quite some time playing you sometimes spend quite a few tries doing supposedly simple things. Also, I got squashed by elevators quite a few times, because I was just a bit over the edge and the elevator began moving through a narrow corridor.
So, all in all I’d say this game could be just awesome, but it has its really frustrating moments, which somewhat ruin it here and there.

the game looks intresting even tho a lil dated reminds me of the good old days of jet set willy and all the classics of yesteryear amiga and spectrum lol. I sill play manic miner and alien8 still people somtimes forget its about having fun and i think to many devs makes games look good and forget about the game play look at Call of duty 4 looks gr8 but the view is as tho you have closed 1 eye and that gos for most console games black hawck down css even duke nukem you had 2 eyes and peripheral vison the makers of spunky should make the lil fellow a bit brighter so he can be seen.

Matches - thanks so much for posting. I thought I was being cack-handed, it was a bit like that horrible moment in Buffy ‘Something Blue’ when Giles goes blind (yeah, just like that), so it’s reassuring to know others found the controls tricky too!

Lunewhite - I miss the Amiga so much! Keep an eye on next weeks episodes. I’m going to be doing one on emulators and reliving some of those glory days.

@ Katharine

Reliving the gaming glory days can be a very disappointing experience. I downloaded a Megadrive emulator and 500 roms a while ago and settled down for some hardcore early 90’s action but really wished I hadn’t. There were a few games that still hold up today like Street Fighter 2 and Sonic but the majority are utter crap. I still remember the first time I played Desert Strike and Road Rash 2 all those years ago and how amazing they were but now they are truly awful.

I miss the Amiga, too. Good old times with simple, yet fun arcade games, and fantastic point & click adventures :) And Dungeon Master, of course.

I recently bought Shadowgrounds and Shadowgrounds: Survivor, which took me back to the good old days of top-down shooters. I was instantly reminded of Alien Breed. I think there’s a demo for the first Shadowgrounds around. The second one is graphically far more impressive and has some added features like physics and so on and kind of a character system, but I don’t know whether there’s a demo out yet. I think it’s worth at least checking out the demo, especially if you can enjoy a bit of old-school arcade gameplay.

Looks like the special offer price of $4.95 on STEAM has been extended to the 17th Jan.
