tech: Finding DRM-free music

Hello and happy new year!

DRM has long been the musical boogeyman, but record labels - and music services - are now starting to wise up to the fact that consumers are fed up with being tied in to one system of music purchasing - like the iTunes/iPod monopoly.

Whilst the big boys get their act together and slowly roll out DRM-free music on Amazon and iTunes, I’ve put together a guide of some of the other great places you can get music in straight MP3 format, no strings. Some of it is ‘big-name’ and much of it is indie. But why not find new stuff?

My favourite DRM-free sites are:

Audio Lunchbox
Jamendo
Emusic
Amie Street
DRM Free
Amazon MP3
iTunes

Enjoy the show - we’re back up and rolling on our regular 3x a week schedule now, so I’ll see you on Wednesday.

Another great place is http://www.zunior.com. They have a lot of Canadian indie bands available for $8.88 an album for 192 kbps mp3, or for two dollars more you can get the album in FLAC. I really enjoy the show and keep up the great work.

There are quite a few sites around that have links to live concert recordings that are of interest when you have collected all the official recordings of your favourite artists. I have listed a few of my favourite sites at http://ukmac.net/2008/01/05/how-to-find-mp3-bootleg-recordings/

Cheers

Amazon has worked great for me and I’ve even saved money on some of the tracks rather buying from iTunes!
