games: Uncharted: Drakes Fortune

What’s this? Another PS3 exclusive worth buying the machine for? Things are looking up for the Sony fans out there - Uncharted is a great game that’s well worthy of anyone’s Christmas play, despite a few niggles.

Hi there,
I have to admit that I’ve only played the demo, however I can’t help but feel that it’s as if they’ve attempted to cross both Gears of War and the more recent Tomb Raider games but fallen heavily on the intense combat as opposed to true adventuring. I admit that it is a great looking game however I feel that the execution of the game is a let down since, as I mentioned above it’s crossbreeding between Gears and Tomb Raider doesn’t quite gel somehow. If you only own a PS3 then it’s certainly worth buying, however I can’t help but feel that those of us with a PC powerful enough to handle GoW and TR: Anniversary might find Uncharted a bit of a let down, especially if they’ve played the other titles I’ve mentioned which seem to both be executed better.

4/5? That’s one of the lowest review scores I’ve seen. If you look over at IGN I believe only 3 of the 30 reviews they link to have given it scores as low as that.

Obviously its down to personal preference but does this game really deserve just 1 star more than Kane & Lynch?

I’m seriously confused about the comments system and navigation on this website. Is it broken or just very very inventive? :)
Anyways, I like the show, keep at it!

That was awesome!!! Played it and it was more than I was hoping for. Thanks for the review!!!

Nice. Although I’d give it a 4.5 simply out of the satisfaction I got after playing it through. Very awesome game. I do agree that there are too many pirate battles, and the puzzles require too much blowing stuff up. I mean, you know the pirate battles are getting rediculous when you manage to break into a sealed vault beneath a library only to find more pirates. Hell knows how they got in.

Cheers for feedback guys!

Norbit - I’m afraid the out-of-5 rating system we initially adopted is proving to be rather unwieldy, particularly as we also chose not to use half marks. Uncharted is definitely on the high side of a 4, but K&L is a straight down the middle 3. Also just doubling up the number doesn’t really give an accurate comparison to sites such as IGN who mark out of 10 and even use decimal points for greater precision. It’s also difficult to compare with different sites who have different standards. I think IGN seem to place average at 7/10 whereas I place it at 3/5. I’m sorry it’s a flawed system, but hopefully the fact that I think this is a great game came through in the review even if you were disappointed by the score. Uncharted is definitely a brilliant game and well worth purchase, but I didn’t think it quite warranted the full 5 stars (although it was getting close).

Caid - Sorry! The comments threading is a little tricky and takes some getting used to. On the front page of playdigital you will see the most recent 10 or so comments made on the site, these are aggregated from the comments left on the individual episode pages. If you click on a comment or an episode, you will go to that particular thread. This is further complicated by the fact that Wil is currently moderating everything himself, on top of working on his own show and running the company, so comments appear in batches and not always as quickly as we would ultimately like. We are aware of the difficulties and are hoping to set up a proper forum at some point in the not too distant future, but we hope that you will bear with us for now. Thanks for posting! :)

I’ve just found out you also gave Crysis a 4… first Crysis and now Uncharted? Now you’re just being mean!

@ktchong:
Would you actually give Crysis 5 out of 5? I mean… yeah, it looks and plays nice, but after 2 or 3 hours the candy-factor wears off and the game remains to be a pretty standard FPS with a story that struggles to compare to a cheesy B-movie. The AI manages to be pretty stupid sometimes, too. I like Crysis, but it’s just not _the_ killer game.

I like that Katharine doesn’t jump on every “hype train” out there and actually uses the whole range from 1 to 5 points instead of just using the upper 30% like other bigger review sites do. A game that is fun, but not really great should get 3 points (for me that’s between 50 and 70 percent), a great game should get 4 points (70 to 90 percent) and an absolute awesome, stunning uber-game should be 5 points (> 90 percent). In that perspective, Crysis still is rated as a great game, which it is, imho. I’ve not yet played Uncharted, but for Crysis I’d say 4 points are okay.

@Matches: I’d give Uncharted the same score as Mass Effect.

peripheral vision 1st is very good the crosshair is not so good the combat system is solid but the lack of freedom is anoying and being pinned down every fight makes this game a looser custers last stand is fun at 1st but then wears thin after 2 hours.The toggle for aim needs to be adressed for console games ie xbox and ps we all would rather have a mouse but shurely the six axis could be used to move the crosshair.
