games: Crysis

Drool, drool, drool!

Ah… today we bask in the beauty that is Crysis. But don’t let yourself get too distracted by the intricate foliage and dappled shadows or you’ll get deaded! Have a look at this gorgeous system killer of a game and hear the low down on the rest of the package, you know, the gameplay and story and stuff.

Have fun,
Katharine

I was really disappointed with this. It was the one PC game apart from Football Manager 2008 that I was definitely going to buy this year but after a few plays of the demo I decided against it.

I found the suit quite annoying and would have referred to play without it and the AI was ridiculous. I sat on top of a hill sniping at an enemy to try out the accuracy of the guns and the guys I hit would just run around a bit and then return to the point where I shot them waiting for me to hit them again.

Bioshock (PC version) and COD:4 both beat this hands down imo.

BTW I dont know what FPS I was getting but I was playing it on an X1900XTX in XP on medium settings with no slowdown at all. I tried on higher settings and it all got a bit messy which is slightly annoying seeing as I paid £370 for that card last year lol

Ever since they showed video footage of crysis, I’ve been dying to play it. The graphics are amazing. Great Review!

Great review. It’s nice to see a review that’s a little more balanced and addresses some of its gameplay issues.

Ken - I was playing with an 8600 GT graphics card, 1280×800 resolution and settings on high with no AA. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the comments.

Pandy - This is a gaming site not a fashion show! ;)

Oh yeah, and Ken, sorry about not including anything on the multiplayer or editor, but between Crysis and the other large games I’ve been playing through I didn’t really have time to look at them. I hope you’ll all post your opinions once you’ve had a go though, I’d be interested to see how those things are. I’ve heard the editor is pretty easy to use. True?

High settings on 8600gt?? No way.
On my8600gt i play with Medium specs, in High mode i have 10-15fps.

The editor, like the engine, is an evolution of the original CryEngine, so it’s same sort of sandbox dealie that makes it really easy to sculpt terrain and place objects, spawns etc
However, if you want to make anything new content wise, you’ll need something like 3D Studio Max.

The one for Far Cry was pretty nice, but despite Crytek really trying to push the modability nothing really happened with it because they took so long getting the SDK out. Hopefully not the case with crysis, the engine is ideal for some sort of Vietnam mod and if they’ve made it easier to edit/create new foliage and the like you could create a more deciduous type of forest as well.

On an un-related note, you thought of getting some sort of forum for the shows? The threading on these comments is a bit skewiff at times and you’re getting a decent volume of comments.

Pruny - you are right, sometimes the fps is way down there. When actually playing this for fun I sadly have to opt for medium settings, but for the sake of reviewing and showing you guys some in game footage I whacked it up to high so you could see better how gorgeous it can look, but also just how jerky it is with these settings. Sorry for not being clear!

Schmung: when I started this gig I really hoped that some sort of community would develop and so I’m really pleased with the discussions that have been going on in the comments and would love to see a better way of facilitating that. Thanks for the suggestion; it is something that we at ChannelFlip Towers have discussed before and are hoping to implement in the not to distant future. As for the threading I can only apologize! As there are only four of us in the company we are pretty well stretched to capacity with workload and so moderating comments doesn’t happen as frequently as it should resulting in some strange threading sometimes. Thanks for bearing with us and this feedback - it’s good to know where we can take things in the future! Thanks also for the info on editing :)

I second the wish for a forum :) Haven’t played Beowulf so far, but it was fun watching you stomp a game into the ground. Having played God of War 1 and 2 I guess a game with less polish in that genre would pretty much suck all the way through. Especially the combat system is pretty crucial for such a game. And not knowing where to go and what to do never is fun.

I did some reading about the new SandBox editor, it _DOES_ require a 64bit OS to use it (Xp64, Vista64) since using a 32-bit OS can lead to instabilities with production size levels due to the low amount of virtual memory available.

@ Ken

I caved in and bought the game and the sandbox editor definitely installs and opens OK on 32bit XP. Whether it fully works is a different matter all together because I havent got a clue what I’m doing in it lol.

Hey guys, the PC gamers/hardware fans among you who don’t already watch Unwired should check this out. Wil has special guest Alex Watson from Custom PC looking at the ATI Radeon 3850, Nvidea 8800 GTI, and EVGA 8800 Ultra in the ‘Cards for Crysis’ episode.

I’m not sure if everyone was aware of this but it turns out you don’t actually need Vista or a DX10 card to play the game on its highest settings.

To get the highest option on XP start the game, set everything to high then exit the game. Next go to this site, download the cfg file and follow the instructions;

http://www.crysis-online.com/?id=449

There are some screenshots on there for comparison. The DX10 is definitely better but this is quite handy if you have a top notch XP gaming rig.

Nice review. Cannot believe your system actually supported this game Kath. I did not dare purchase this game and try it out as I know it will kill my machine off the instance I load it up.(lol) I think i read somwhere that the most powerful machine was required to power this game up. Personally, I rather wait for the game to end up on consoles than wasting my money on it and see it lag to bits on my system. I hope to see it coming to consoles in the future.
