games: Ratchet and Clank Future

Hey!

Today we have one of the best looking games I’ve seen this year, Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction on PS3. This is a great, fun and charming action and platforming game in which your fuzzy faced Lombax character runs around like a crazy thing, killing bad guys and collecting bolts with your quirky little robot buddy. Awesome.

Enjoy the show and subscribe (iTunes link!) or check back next week for reviews of Assassin’s Creed, Crysis and Beowulf.

Cheers,
-K

Another great review!
I would definitely buy this game, no quesiton…but I’ve just never quite felt it with Ratche and Clank. I mean, bring on another Resistance, by all means, and I’ll buy that in a second (the first was just fantastic, blowing Halo out of the water (not that that’s difficult, imo)) but I’ve always been a Naughty Dog fan, so I’ll stick with my Uncharted.

This does look like a really good game. The difficulty level has been criticised and its a shame you cant change it from the off but apparently when you have completed it you can play again on a harder setting.

This game certainly has replayability. When you beat the game you can go back with all your original gear and play thru it again - earning multipliers for a crazy amount of bolts. You then use those to upgrade you weapons to level 10. Great review K

Wow that looks like a pretty good game. I had never gotten into the Ratchet and Clank franchise before, mainly because I didn’t get a PS2 until years later.
I’m definitely going check this one out.
Great review Kat.

@ Pandy

The biggest selling Halo game Halo 2 sold 8m on the Xbox. Seeing as there are over 25M Xbox’s sold that means that the majority of Xbox owners didn’t like it enough to buy it. Then of course you have 100m PS2 owners who haven’t bought an Xbox or 360 at all never mind a Halo game so they obviously dont hold Halo in much regard. I’m not having a go at Halo at all. The same thing can be said about Metal Gear Solid games or pretty much every other title. I’m just trying to make the point that while you think a game is fantastic the vast majority of gamers disagree with you no matter what game it is. The most popular games only sell to a tiny minority of the market.

Jack Vykios obviously doesn’t think much of Halo. The fact that someone chooses a PS3 over a 360 pretty much guarantees they dont think much of Halo so its not surprising or odd in the slightest that a PS3 owner thinks Resistance is better than Halo 3 after all it isnt exactly a bad game. The IGN score for it was 9.1 compared to 9.5 for Halo 3.

Great review, I agree with the AI problems completly.

I was hoping that you would have touched on the multiplayer aspect of the game, or the sandbox editor.

Also, what is your rig set up? and what res were you using?

I can run on High @ 1680 x 1050 without AA and get around 40fps with a 8800GTX and a e6600 OC’d to 3.00ghz

@ Norbit: Good point about even popular games only selling to a minority of the market. I hadn’t thought about it that way before! I think one thing that is coming out of these kinds of discussions is that no matter how refined a developer makes their game, personal taste will still do its thing. One thing, from the statistical point of view, you can’t necessarily guarantee that all those PS2/3 owners don’t also own an Xbox/360; there are lots of people who like both consoles, or even love one or two key games on one but buy the other for whatever reason.

Hey Ken - I assume you are talking about for Crysis? I have posted a reply with spec under that video to avoid confusion!

Katharine said: “you can’t necessarily guarantee that all those PS2/3 owners don’t also own an Xbox/360″

That’s why I said 100m PS2 owners and not the full 125m. I allowed 25m to cover the people who might own both consoles :)

Just wanted to post my first comment here. Have watched all the videos here now and have to say: Nice reviews, thx for them, they are really enjoyable and I like that you always take the time to point out the cons, even for a really good game.
That said, I agree with Norbit completely. I don’t like Halo and I liked the bit of Resistance I played, but that’s just a matter of taste. Both titles play nice enough to be enjoyable, the rest is up to you.

@Ken: I have the same rig you do and I can run the demo pretty well on 1920×1200 with very high settings. Did get similar results to yours with your settings, though, so I was pretty surprised how well it ran at these considerably higher settings. Game looks and plays sweet, but I somehow hoped for a nice story to go along with it. I guess I’ll give it a try anyway, I’m just a sucker for fancy graphics :)

Dear Katharine and Wil at Channel Flip,

Hey you guys; oops, and gals…

I am writing here because I spend most of my time checking out Katharine’s reviews, which is probably because seeing an intelligent and attractive girl review video games is fascinating. No doubt, I am the guy that bought my mom a PS3-plasma-TV set up hoping that she would help stimulate those neurons in a different way, however no success except to say that when I came up a few months later and finally opened up Ratchet & Clanks Future: Tools of Destruction and played it for her, she complained about Ratchet being such a harmful little creature. “It’s a game mom!” “I don’t care; he shouldn’t be so mean.”

I support the idea that maintaining a healthy brain can be fun. Not that reading microbiology and working math is not fun. Why not do both?

Well William and Katharine your reviews are not tied anymore 55 Wil to 57 Kat; who will take the lead? Katharine will…just kidding! 55 and 57, where have I been? Busy with school, that is where.

Anyway, I love to play the game Katharine; I never would have bought a PS3 if it was not for your review. Now when I visit my mother, I get to have a little more fun with my nephew. Thanks to you!

From the USA to the UK, (Am I right?), thank you to both of you for sharing your talents with the rest of us. And Wil, you were the one who drew me to this Internet station; however, when I found out that you had a gem on board, I was drawn to her. Furthermore, I only have so much time to spend perusing the Inernet (also known as the Internet in the United Kingdom). Sorry bro… Nevertheless, I still do watch your videos, usually only once though.

Here is to the both of you and Channel flip TV; God bless you all.

Sincerely,
Joseph
