Ahoy there mateys!

Zelda Zelda Zelda Woo! Put your happy pills away friends, you won’t be needing them where we’re going. Er… ok, sorry, I get a little overexcited sometimes, but take a look at the wonderfully charming Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass and you will see why.

UK viewers can pick it up from Amazon here.

Subscribe or check back on Friday for a look at the rather more serious Call of Duty 4 demo. Hmmm… imagine what would happen if Link had an M1A2 Abrams…

Agree with the review, beautifully realised, brilliant controls, but DAMN it’s easy (and short). I picked it up Friday evening and finished it Sunday and I wasn’t exactly devoting every waking minute to it. Certainly seems a lot shorter than Link to the Past and the bosses were a walkover.

Loved it whilst playing, but a little disappinted it ended so soon.

(Love the Link costume BTW)

I just found this review from a recent Destructiod post, and I’d have to say that I’m pretty impressed. A clear and concise review. Not to mention that your level of diction is far beyond that of an assortment of game review videos I’ve seen (GT Reviews I consider the highest standard out there). Just subscribed to the podcast and I’m looking forward to seeing some great reviews.

In regards to the difficulty of the game, I can’t help but think its portable nature is a factor. When playing a portable game, I find that my patience is usually a fraction of what it is when I’m tapping away at a console title. Since PH seems to use a lot of stylus control, I wonder how long it can be played at a time.

Keep up the great work!

Very good review.

The girl makes it interesting and fun to watch.
Dont know why the moany old fags over at theinquirer.net are rambling on about this like it’s a bad thing. Maybe next time they can just do yet another article bashing Vista… or not.

She talks too much.

The positive youthful hetersexuals over at the Inq are now rambling about something equally as silly … waterproof laptops.

Evidently women won’t be getting pregnant using them either.

Vista is being EOL’d once XP2.1 is out.

Thanks for the free publicity !!!

Don’t know if theinquirer are rambling on LoZ DS or about this review, but one thing’s for sure: Katherine is gorgeous. Are theinquirer blind? Or tasteless? Actually, that wouldn’t surprise me…

Excellent review, yes our reviewess had most of my attention admittedly, but it’s difficult to make video game reviews interesting whilst not lapsing into nerdy jargon. Which certainly didn’t happen here. Nice one Katherine!

Katherine is hot. If she was in the game, with or without that costume, I’d buy a DS right now.

Might have to go and watch it again. Yeah.

I think she caught our attention because…

It’s a GIRL who’s reviewing games — a GIRL!

And she also reviews Half-Life 2, Team Fortress 2, HALO 3, and PGR4! Holy crap.

(Or maybe it’s really her boyfriend who wrote the scripts and put her up to this. Something’s fishy here, I tell you.)

She is one of the best game reviewers I have seen on video in a long time. I’m actually interested in watching her reviews, instead of just reading them on an alternate site. Everything from the cutesy wootsy to the slamin jamin.

She’s awesome, with the “Intel” to do it. Among most girls who play games out there, they do not announce reviews like that one does.

In addition, we need to see more of those positively extroverted girls out there(, for balance’s sake among the male-dominated genre).

Katharine, I am completely charmed by your love and pixie dust. But I also want to commend you for being so sharpwitted and articulate. Your review was analytical, precise, and right on the mark. That’s what made your video such a pleasure to watch. Keep up the good work!

First up I’d like to welcome all the new viewers who made their way over here from FileFront, Destructoid, the Inquirer and N4G (and thanks guys for linking us). There’s too many to respond to all individually, but I just wanted to say a huge thank you for all the comments and support, it always really helps to know what you think (good and bad).

Goblin: wow - I’m impressed. It’s not the most difficult game ever, but it certainly took me longer than that to get through! *tips hat*.

Ryuta - interesting point about the difference between the psychology of playing portable and console games. I guess it could be related to the fact that many people use their portables for 10 minutes of time passing whilst waiting for the bus etc. rather than sitting down for a big session. I found myself playing for around 1.5 hours at a time with this game, but stopping was more to do with the small screen than the stylus (but my hand defaults to pen holding mode anyway, so I might not be a reliable test subject for that question!)

nobody 1 - haha! I can imagine the conversation with the tax officials now… ‘So, Miss Fletcher, you are being paid for work which our sources tell us is done by your boyfriend. This sounds like tax evasion to me.’ ‘Um, sir, i don’t have a boyfriend…’ ‘You invented him? FRAUD, FRAUD!’ and then I’m in jail!

PCxxy - tru dat!

How about it Katharine? Like you dressed up for the Zelda review, you should continue and carry on a costume theme for all of the games. Maybe no all of them because you’d need a lot of costumes but how bout a ww2 outfit for COD 4, a Master Chief costume for Halo 3, as a couple of examples.
That could be your thing and make the reviews more interesting as well. Not that we want to detract from the games, and not to suggest that they’re not interesting anyway.

Just a thought. Keep up the good work!

Katharine
November 9th, 2007 - 5:27am

Haha - cheers for the suggestion Cylon Jason ;) perhaps I’ll do another costumed one if the right game presents itself… (if we ever get Beautiful Katamari over here I’ll definitely do that!) The main problem is time though. I don’t even have a sewing machine so I was up very late into the night hand stitching that Link outfit and that was a pretty simple one. With three episodes a week I’d never get any sleep!

G-Dog - good question. Tbh, I’m not sure - sorry! It’s feasible but I can’t confirm or deny.

Greetings, I found this site on the GameTrailers forums and loved the first episode I saw. Your reviews are awesome, to the point and much more human compared to the spiel produced by most magazines.

I was surprised though, like others here, to see a woman doing game reviews and I wonder what sort of games you’re into because most girl gamers are not into a verity of games like guys are (unfortunately)?

Also do you need any other reviewers cus I’m doing a computer games tech uni course and could use the game analysis practise (for free obviously)?

Katharine
November 12th, 2007 - 3:14pm

Thanks Siolis :) I like a variety of different games depending on my mood. I really love the puzzling and exploring side of things so tend to like platform games or RPGs. But I also like blasting crap in FPS, and hand to hand fighting (the SoulCalibur series is one of my favourites ever). I also like the simplicity of a lot of flash games or old school or abstract shooters. For me it’s more about the quality of the individual game rather than liking a genre, especially nowadays when genres are getting quite mixed in big games. I have to admit I’m not big on sports games, and although I like it, I’m pretty useless at non-campaign multiplayer FPS!

Thanks for the offer, but we’re just starting up and at the moment we’re sticking to just one reviewer for each show. If we do expand I’ll try to let you know. Do feel free to post comments about games in these threads though, and let us know if you come across any obscure or interesting gems in your course. Out of interest, which uni are you at? I didn’t know you could study such things!

You don’t have a boyfriend?! Wow, if the collective mind of single geekdome didn’t explode at that moment, I am sure it snapped to attention. I guess I wouldn’t know because I am happily married to a bit of a geek myself, but I think it’s a safe assumption.

It looks like you’re doing a great job. Congrats to you, Katharine, and Wil H.
I’ll have to come back, and check out the site more often. Hopefully you’ll review more DS games. It seems like the DS is a great system, but it can be so hard to find good games for it, which is strange since it has the largest install base of any gaming platform (unless you count PCs people aren’t really gaming on).

I’ll probably get burned at the stake for saying this but I thought the antics and costume were a bit much on this one. The novelty of an attractive fangirl gamer that actually plays across more genres than most guys do will keep the fanboy eyeballs glued to the screen long enough for them to realize that your editorial is rock solid.

If it looks like you’re trying too hard to get people’s attention it might cause them to marginalize what you’re actually saying.

My advice: Keep the editorial jokes, but lose the slapstick stuff. You’ve got a knack for spoken delivery and you do a bangup job of prioritizing the proper details of the games with the time constraints you’re under. There’s no need to emphasize the cute girl factor as that’s blatantly obvious and the less you appear to be consciously banking on it, the more it will work for you.

Katharine
December 11th, 2007 - 5:53am

Hey Pherdnut, thanks for the comment (and offer of advice). I grant you stake immunity - although having said that, Oxford is rather famous for its incendiary behaviour towards heretics! I appreciate what you’re saying about the gimmicks, and will bear that in mind. Really, it was a bit of silly fun because I really liked the game and an early attempt at trying something different, but it memed quite a bit! Still, we’re grateful that it got us some exposure, and that for every 100 people who wanted to watch a silly girl dressed as an elf, a few serious gamers were interested in what I had to say about the game and stuck around. Thanks so much for the encouragement and advice, I am trying to keep things a little more subtle now, although if Beautiful Katamari gets released over here I can’t promise anything! :)
