games: Halo 3

Wooo! Halo 3! No introduction necessary, except to tell those of you who haven’t finished it yet (I’m not judging - I know you have jobs!) not to worry as there aren’t any plot spoilers in the review.

You can get the game here and check out the 1up reviews mentioned in the show on the campaign and multiplayer.

Subscribe or check back on Friday to hear about Jam Sessions for the DS, an intriguing direction for portable gaming.

Congratulations! I really enjoyed this episode. Nice and refreshing review of Halo3. I couldn’t agree more to all of your comments, especially regarding all the bashing about the game. 5/5 for Halo and for this Episode! Keep it going!

Agree, one of the best FPS on console to come out, 5/5.

I agree that there are far too many people out there hating on the game and it’s not terrible, it’s above mediocre. I had fun playing it but it was just a shallow shoot-em-up with an overly blown out and convoluted story that Bungie does a not-so-great job of presenting. Not to mention the wooden and uninteresting caricatures inhabiting the world (it’s pretty bad when the background dialogue is more fun and interesting than the story dialogue.) It’s better than Halo 2, that’s for sure.
The multiplayer is great and easily worth the price alone but the single player was pretty disappointing (I wasn’t even expecting a whole lot and I still felt let down) and it drags down the whole experience. With games like Orange Box out on console, which presents a full and satifying single and multiplayer experience, I don’t think this deserves a 5 but earns a definite 4/5 for being fun to play but sadly nothing else.

Also, the lighting is beautiful but most of the character models aside from the Chief and Arbiter look like upscaled Xbox models. Sorry, had to say it.

Love the show and will continue watching.

There are always “ultra-kool” types who hate - by default - every hyped game. They’re worthy of little more than derision and ridicule.

I’ve only dipped my toe in the one-player campaign (although I completed Halo & Halo 2), and it does look more of the same (with the admittedly more polished graphics, which yes, have been bettered by the Unreal Engine used in GOW). But the XBL ’social slayer’ mode is one of the best online experiences yet.

Headshots are just sooooo enjoyable.

5 stars is such a regressive scoring system. So I’ll award the online play 9/10.

Thanks for all the comments guys. And great to see some thoughtful discussion of the game, so thanks for that Jason. I can see what you’re getting at, and as an RPG fan, then yeah, I definitely feel your pain regarding some of the caricatured presentation, but when taking it on its own terms as a bombastic shooter, then I do think it stands up. I certainly had a lot of fun playing it. Glad to hear you’re loving the Orange Box though! Cheers guys -K

Good review, got to admit I hadn’t noticed a lot of the voices in the game, only that Lord whatshisname was voiced by Ron Pearlman and the Arbitor was voiced by Keith “Spawn” David.

The multiplayer is excellent, and while I enjoyed the campaign I feel that it was built with co-op in mind rather than just single player as Co-op with Meta-game enabled really elevates the campaign above the sum of it’s parts.

Rob Perlman was in it? That’s awesome! I can’t believe I didn’t spot that; I’m a huge fan. mmm radiator…

Wank review. Ben’s “Yahtzee”Croshaw review is so much better and he actually brings good arguments to the review.

Sander, his reviews are always great and hilarious but he only seems to focus on negatives in all his reviews. Just laugh at his nitpicks and go elsewhere for more detailed/serious reviews.

I really like Yahtzee’s work, especially Zero Punctuation, but I see little point in trying to reproduce or imitate what has already been done so well. Sorry if that means you’re not interested in what we do Sander.

Actually, it’s not the alternative emo boys, goth girls, or pot-smoking hippies who are hating on Halo 3. It’s the legions of PS3 fanboys who desperately want to see Halo 3 and Xbox 360 fail.

I don’t hate halo, but being a long time PC gamer, there have been several games that have been on par or better than the halo series. I agree, their very good games, but their not as redefining as alot of other games have been.
Fps for consoles isn’t exactly one of their strongest points. Granted there have been several really good ones, but not very near the number that has been available for PC.

I quite enjoyed the review, although it needs to include more critisisms. The good point’s are repeated everywhere. Thats one of the features of “Zero Punctuation” reviews that make them the best reviews of anything i’ve seen.

You forgot to mention that the graphics on marines are really bad which ruined it abit for me and my own teams AI which cant drive and single player was abit short. 4/5
