games: Sega Rally

Out on the Xbox 360 and PS3 this week was the latest incarnation of Sega Rally, which we haven’t seen on a home console for what seems like an age. Let’s be kind and say it has ‘retro’ graphics, and ‘realistic’ handling, even if we actually mean sub-par and annoyingly-twitchy.

There’s little to choose between the Xbox 360 and the PS3 version, save for the fact the Xbox version has rumble, hence it’s the version we have here.

Check back on Wednesday for my take on Halo, and be sure to subscribe to the show feed. I’m in New York this weekend, and I’ll be returning with a copy of Zelda for the DS. Tasty.

Great review, at first i thought this game looked amazing but you made some good valued points and i totally agree with you I’m will be sure not to buy this.

A few things to add:

-Sony are releasing Dualshock/Sixasis controllers in the future, apparently failure to release was due to a court case.

-Are you going to be doing any PC game reviews?

-Whens the PGR4 review coming?

Hey guys, thanks for the feedback and support! Really glad you’re enjoying it and finding the shows useful.

Sam, in response to your questions:
- Ah, the future and the many promises it holds! Have you seen this Penny Arcade strip? Hilarious.

-I am currently writing up reviews of Half Life Ep. 2 and Team Fortress 2 for PC, which we will film tomorrow and air next week. Good to know people are interested in this; I will keep my eye out for other interesting PC releases.

- the Europe release date of PGR4 is Oct 12th so my review will go up in the week starting on the 22nd (unfortunately as we’re just starting out, we don’t get preview copies and it takes a bit of time to play the games and the write up, film and edit the episodes).

Cheers!

hi guys, how’s it going? Enjoying the show!..

I really didn’t enjoy this game at all, just finished uninstalling after 10 mins play. i remember sega rally from back in the day, really short but really enjoyable, one of the biggest problems for me in this game is the way the camera follows the back of the car or doesn’t in this case, in the old games including sega rally 2006 on the ps2, the camera was tight to the back of the , gave you the feeling that you are in control of the car, in this game it feels as if the car is nailed to centre of the screen so it doesn’t feel as if you’re driving around the corners or drifting around the corners is a very strange feeling and not at all enjoyable!

Looking forward to the next review

I totally hear you Fabian. And great point about the way the available camera angles effect the gaming experience. Thanks!

I actually bought the game on the 360, and so far, it’s awesome. It’s hard to drive at the “3rd person” perspective, but once you change to “in-car”, it’s waaaaay better.

The colours are vibrant, and the sound is fantastic. Run it to a 5.1 surround system, you’ll see what I mean.

And playing online is quite fun (well… at least when you’re able to find some available games ;-)
Lastly, great job with the reviews!
