games: Marathon: Durandal

We’ve been playing Halo 3 like everyone else, but I thought it would be a good plan to check out Bungie’s original masterpiece, Marathon, to get some retro action.

The Mac classic is now on Xbox Live Arcade in the form of Marathon: Durandal, which sports many of Halo’s features, including dual-wield weapons and insane multiplayer.

For those of us too busy playing Doom to play it the first time around, check out my appraisal of Halo’s forerunner.

(See what I did there?)

Gods, that game takes me back. Great fun, good story.

And while it a pity that you can’t play Marathon 1, where three different AI’s fight over you like you’re a favourite chew toy, at least it avoids you having to get through the worlds most annoying puzzle - due to the lack of ability to jump, there’s a room where you need to get a dozen different platforms to just the right height so you can run from one to the other, all the way to the exit. And the controls for these platforms? Spread throughout the entire level, for no understandable reason.

But yes, almost enough to make me consider buying an Xbox…

The entire Marathon Trilogy can be played for free - LEGALLY - by getting the open source Aleph One project at source.bungie.org
